FRIDAY, JUNE 20, 1919. TOWNLEY AGENT, WORKED AGAINST SELECT SERVICE H. 1. Trelease Charged With Petitioning for Repeal of Conscription Act NOT AMERICAN CITIZEN Organizer for Socialists Subject of Great Britain—Opposed Enlistment? That if President Wilson’s head were split open with an axe it would not be found to contain anything more than the head of the average Nort. Dakota farmer; that a man would be @ fool to join the navy; that the con- scniption act as unconstitutionat; that it should be resisted, and that “we” have enough men to resist it successfully, are some of the state- ments attributed to H. I. Trelease of Garrison, a Townley organizer and agitator, whose trial on a charge 0! violating the espionage act of June 15, 1917, was completed in federal dis- trict court this afternoon. Trelease has been a resident of America for fifteen years, but he has not become a citizen of the United States. “Technically” he informed the court today he is still a subject of Great Lritain. He is a man who pro- fesses unusual educational and intel- lectual attainments, having, he stated © cross examination, ‘having had ex- ceptional opportunities to improve himself as a young man in his own country, ‘Spoke in McLean County. The indictment of Trelease by a federal grand jury was an outgrowth of statements attributed to the Gar- rison man at a Townley meeting he conducted at Sirawderry lake, in Mc- Lean county, July %, 1918. A witness for the defense who appeared on the stand in a new soldier's uniform could not recall this morning any of the statements which Trelease made at Strawberry lake, altho he had driven Trelease about in his own machine to various league ‘meetings in McLean county and vi This afternoon, however, admitting on cross examina. tion that his memory had been re- freshed during the noon‘hour by coun- sel for the defense, the soldier recall- ed that Trelease had said that militar- ism must be smashed and that all wars must end. : Government's Coritentions. The evidence introduced by the gov- ernment, as summed up in District the jury, was ei the lease was wriling and circulating ‘pe- titions calling for the repeal of the conscription act; that Trelease stated that the conscription Jaw was uncon stitutional and should be resisted, and that “we have enough men to resist it!” that the great struggle in which America was engaged was a war of the :rich,” and that “we ought not to have gone into it,” and “it's a ‘var where your boy and my boy is to be slaughtered for the benefit of some- one else.” Trelease was arraigned by General Hildreth as a man “who hates all gov- ernments and defies this government.” The prosecutor declared that Trelease had admitted that ¢c was circulating petitfons against the conscription act, and he branded Trelease as a man who was too wise to no! know what he was about and one for that reason who was dangerous.
