HOLDEN T: County Agent or Farm Adviser can secure no greater assistance than that which will be cheerfully and gladly rendered’ by the’editots of his local papet ‘ = In these days when America faces the task of producing 60 per cent. of the world's food, and we are calléd upon to solve many serious prob- ‘Jems of reconstruction, the duty and responsibility which rest upon, the )County Agent ore much greater than In normal times. ies i More than ever before he should try to render every ¢ervice possible to the people of his community. More than ever he must be alert to seize Evers opportunity to assist in ineréasidg production and preventing losses. b ‘ More than any other nett Fi worker, the County Agent is ‘familiar ‘with the needs and possibilit hfs community. He knows the climatic conditions, the soil conditiongy, and fhe market conditions, He knows the various problems that confront the fdtmers of his county. ‘i A Source of\ Information. « He is in a position to know how each of these problems has heen success ‘fully solved by one or another of the farmers in his locality, and he cen render no greater service thin by seeing that every other farmer profits by. the experience. \ . In short, he should secure as much practical information as possible and he should make every effort to sce that this information reaches’ every farm home. This can be most quickly and most thoroughly accomplished by making use of the columns of his local paper, It would take him several months to yisit every farm in the average county; it would take several days to even telephone to every farmer. But the local papers reach every farmer in a few hours. When hog cholera or some ether animal disease breaks out in the com- munity, the local pre n immediate means for sounding a warning to farmers and for furn such advice and ¢ounsel as miay be necessary. The need of harvesting seed corn before it freezes; of properly storing it and testing it; the wisdom of treating oats for smut; the best way of com- bating insect pests; the care offffarm machinery—these and scores of otter matters can be presented through the local papers ina manner that will make the articles of great importance both to the readers and to the papéts. \ Editors Glad to Get Articles. If the articles are brief and to the point; if they are timely and deal with some agricultural or hor nroblem of importance to the community; if. they. are educational in natu and not merely an outline of work done by tie County Agent, they will be welcomed by editors. Many of the more prominent daily newspapers in the middle West donate an entire page on certain day§ in the week to the use of the County Agent. and Farm Bureau.- These p: have found the plan ex¢eedingly profitable.
