TRIBUNE FINANCIAL DEPARTMENT] DEALING SLACK ON STOCK MART “Lack of Advices From War Zone Give Hesitiant Trend; Reading Active New York, N. Y., April 2—For all practical purposes today's stock mar- ket was little more than a duplicate of the previous day. Reading was a trife more active and diversified, bit the tone was hesitant on the further absence of decisive advices fom abroad, : Raila were conspicuous for their extreme ‘backwardness, Canadian Pac- Sfle being the only important issue to vary 80 much as a point. Jn the main the trend in that divis- fon was downward, coalers losing sub- stantial fractions, but hardening to- ward the close. United States steel, which yielded leadership to such speculative issues as Sumatra Tobacco and Studebaker, traversed a very~narrw area, while Sumatra registered an extreme gain of three points and Studebaker ad- vanced 1%. Pools relieved the mon- otony by occasional diversions in special stocks, industrial alcohol, dis- tiller's securities and malting pre- ferred gaining between one and two points. General Motors improved on Studebarek’s better showing and min- or metals derived some stimulus from a four point rise in National lead. Shippings steadied on relaxation of recent pressure and prominent equipments were featured by Ameri- can car and Baldwin locomotive, at extreme gains of 1% to 2 points, Am- erican. can also advancing one point and Atlantic, Gulf 2%. Sales am- ounted to 180,000 shares. Industrial conditions assumed more hopeful aspects on the recovery of pigtron production, as disclosed by statistics for March, and prospects of large ‘ government contracts for rail- roal supplies, ; Further strength in French issues marked. the irregular bond list, liberty also moving variably. Total sales (par value) aggregated $5,275,000. United States bonds, old issues: were un changed on call. . NEW YORK “MONEY New. York, N. Prices closed unsettled with oats 1% @ 1% to 1%e net high- er, and corn’ ‘up at $1.25%, May. Provisions gained 12 to 62c¢, Activity centered in the oats mar- ket, and there was a notable evident renewal of seaboard demand, based apparently on. apprehension that cold might result in serious interference with the germination of the new crop. Assertions of some authorities that low temperatures would have a bene- fical influence by retarding top growth and by strengthening roots failed to allay uneasiness or to bring about any lasting check to the ascent of the mar: ket. An additional bullish factor \ knowledge that the United States vi: ible supply was still 16,000,000 bush- els less than was the case a year ago, and that the avail- as compared with last year Corn sympathized with the oats strength, nothwithstanding that the visible supply of corn is about 7,000,- 000 bushels in s of the aggre- gate at the corresponding time in 1917. Bulls re handicapped, though by material improvement in the qual- ity of receipts here. .
