Ansbl MOTOR CO, — Phone 700 (PETERSON FAVORS USE OF LIGNITE Dickinson Editor Believes Em- bargo on Exports Patriotic Move for State (E. L. PETERSON.) Dickinson, N. D., Feb, 12.--Whiic Minnesota and the central eastern states have their heathless Mondays and exercise great anxiety as to the source of replenishing their coal stocks, mines of North Dakota are running twenty-five per cent of their ability. Authorative informa orth: Dakotans can sav per cent on their coal costs by using their local coal and this boun- tiful fuel will burn in any stove that has a decent draft. The mines of the state can handle the entire requirements of North Da- kota and perhaps western South Da-, kota until the heavy rush of next fall. Does it not seem that North Dakota ould through respect for their product and for patriotic re: ladly burn their own coal, there ving haul into North Dakota on Pen inia anthra- cite and bituminous tion shows that Ni twenty to ‘n the centr lay in the week through patriotism to help the government help solve the ‘| problem, why should North Da- ns and eastern nesota folks not ¢a Ir ate, which i y it may be the ta ‘North Dakota, will come to the rescue and point out to the folks their patri- otic duty in the present crisis. One million tons of this coal was burnéd in North Dakota last year, It is used by all the state institutions and in thousands of homes, lack of knowledge of the saving and the knack of burning, (which is simple), are the only reasons that this coal is not universally used within the pounds of the state. To North Dakota folks who realize the vastness of the coal deposits of the state and the fact that the mines engaged in producing this coal are only working one-fourth of their ca- pacity, “Tag Your Shovel Day” cer- tainly has the appearance of being far fetched. The mines in this state are now run- ning but one-fourth capacity. Some time ago, they were urged by I. P. Baker, federal fuel administrator for the state of North Dakota, to pre- pare for a large tonnage and this was responded to by the mines which went to considerable expense in ar- ranging for the contemplated added production, The Duluth coal docks are now sell- ing their product in this state instead of sending it into W: nsin and Min- nesota, thus withholding their coal from the states direly in need of fuel. There is no coal rate out of this ind efforts are now being made r an adjustment of this matter. Commercial clubs over the state are interested in holding an embargo on outside coal, mainly because of the plentitude of North Dakota coal and the urgent demand of the east for fuel.
