THE BEMIDJI DAILY PIONEER T~ SPEED WAGON SNORTS UP TAMALPAIS ON TIES “Power as well as spced,” thus Mr. Malgahn, local Reo dealer character- izes the trip which a Reo Specd W gon recently made to “Tamalp. top. “Tamalpais is San Francisco's famous mountain,” says Mr. Malzahn. “From its summit more geography is in evidence than from any other point in the world, fourteen cities and coun- { ties, numerous bays, capes, straits, I8 peninsulas, islands, mountains and the Pacific ocean. It is also possible to see Mount Shasta, 200 miles away, on 3 a clear day.” # The trip which the Reo Speed Wa- gon made up this mountain emphasiz- es the tendency of the general public to freely acknowledge the speed of the Reo without knowing its surplus of powerq Tamalpais presented an opportunity for a very unusual test to bring out| ST this contention. Through the cour- tesy of the Tamalpais and Muir Railway company, a special arrange- ment was made whereby the truck, with an official pilot representing dis- patcher’s orders, was permitted to negotiate the grade over the railroad right of way. This road has the unique distinc. tion of being the crookedest railroad in the world—281 curves. To make the climb a. truck must run over the ties and ballast and straddle the rails. The Speed Wagon, which was a reg- ular canopy express job, loaded to ca- pacity (one and one-fourth tons,) made the trip without difficulty, with- out heating and without the slightest damage to the load. This bears addi- tional testimony to the general con- struction, especially the springs. The trip took fitly minutes. The train takes one hour and five minutes. When one siops to consider that the work reqi'rs a special type of gear- driven lo:o nntive (he significance of the Speed Wagon's performance is better uadeistood. REO EXHIBIT ATTRACTS AT GOOD ROADS SHOW The movement for good roads re- ccived further impetus at the 13th Road Builders' association in Chica- g0, according to F. M. Malzahn, local Reo .dealer. He states that a Reo Speed Wagon equipped with a Roud Floater and Dump Body is one of the most interesting exhibits and a dis- play which is attracting unusual at- tention. In speaking of the job, Mr. Mal- zahn says: “A Speed Wagon equip- ped with a road floater will replace up to six teams of horses in doing this class of work. It has demon- strated its ability to do better and faster ‘work than horse drawn equip- ment. It will handle gravel at a speed of from ten to fifteen miles an hour, At this speed it will spread the gravel more evenly and fill up all the little cups and ruts. It has proved equally effective in maintaining the ordinary type of dirt road.” The floater, or leveling apparatus, . can be hung on cither side of the Speed Wagon. It is adjustable to dif~ ferent pressures on the road. With a dump body the Speed Wagon will fiarry_prnctieully a yard of gravel, ‘floating” the road as it goes along. annual meeting of the American Good | Speed Wagon Lauipped With sz:deodu an: ‘lg:ad Floater FEDERAL-AID HIGHWAY WORK Texas Leads In Mileage With 1,116.4 Miles, With Minnesota Ranking a Close Second.
