OFFICIAL COUNTY AND- CITY PROCEEDiNGS WHAT IS YOUR IDEA ABOUT IT? The essay contest being put on by the Civic and Commerce association, as explained m Thursday’s Pioneer, on *“What Makes Bemidji a Good City,” will undoubtedly have the effect of starting considerable thonghl on the part of citizens, who heretofore accepted the fact without turther lhuugh! it ma even have the effect of convicing some that it is a good cit who, before, may not really been willing to concede that fact, although we are sure of that class there are few in Bemidji. It.may lead many of us to see our city as outsiders see it. Unfortunately, all of us do not feel just as enthusiastic about our city as we should; if we did, there would not be so much criticism. We have a good city, the best city in Minnesota; we must believe in it and show our confidence to others. Think up all the good points about the city, Decide what it*is that makes it a goml city and write it down for the consid- eration of the Civic and Commerce association, who are putting on.the contest, and who may be able to use your ideas with much pro\.. S S A WISE CHOICE The placing of H. M. Clark at the head of the livestoc division of the fair for 1 at once insures a fine exhibit in that line. The result of his efforts this vear were far beyond even his own expectations, and, according to information given by Mr. Clark, more stock of high grade would have been exhibited this year had there been a place to house it. Already mar new exhibitors have expressed their intention to bring the stock to the fair next summer, and it is very likely that the num- ber of head of livestock w hich will be exhibited next year will be limited only by the accommodation possible to pm\ule The reputation of the Northern Minnesota fair has trav eled tar and wide, and many who tailed to visit'it this year will not fail to be on hand next year. S, ST, THE BABY CLINIC Every mother, who possibly can, should avail herselt of the opportunity of the baby clinic which is to be held in the Central school tomorrow. Every possible arrangement has been made for the comfort of both. mother and child at the clinic, and the opportunity is one which should be taken advantage 'f Many babies, to all appearances in the best of health, may, u known to the mother, be defective in some respects least e pected by the parent. These defects may easily be overcome in many cases when treated early, while they may become serious h(lll(ll(‘d]]\ to the child when allowed to run their Lomse O— There is at Kansas City this week a great array of not- ables, Foch, Pershing, Beatty, Diaz and many others are there as guests of the American Legion. The third national convention of the :\mcnum Legion is meeting in that city this week. It is hard to say which feel the greater honor, the guests mentioned above who have been in- vited to attend this great convention, or the Legionaires who have had the invitation extended to these notables, accepted. It is a happy combination anyway, and many lasting friendshiy will be made which will result in closer relationships between the great nations represented at the Kansas City convention. RGN o i FAIR IN AUGUST NEXT YEAR The announfement of the decision of the Fair board to hold the Northern Minnesota fair next summer in August will undoubtedly prove popular. While it may make it somewhat harder to secure exhibits of végetable and grains so early, it is a fact, nevertheless, that much of the exhibit that is sent year- ly to the state fair is gathered about that time, and, with the weather that usually comes in Northern Minnesota about the last of August, there is no guestion but that the fair will bey mudéh more largely attended than it was this year. e e Seventy-five million dollars should be good news. ton so voted the other day. Now it is up to the senate. -If it passes, Minnesota will receive about $2,000,000 of it. This will help Commissioner Babcock to keep some of the state road work going all winter and will materially aid in the solution of some of the unemployment which now exists. D= i The miners in the east are going to strike. If winter never came, neither would the miners strike. You never heard of a miners’ strike in the spring. We don’t know what the strike is for this year. Perhaps so we may be prepared for the annual winter's announcement of coal prices. Sure signs of winter.
