WEDNESDAY EVENING, AUGUST 24, 1921 Gas Buggies—That’s just like a woman COME ON- HURRY UP AND GET IN THE CAR- LOOK AT THOSE BUM: TAKING IN ALL ROCHS ARE [AEE RS ENE LR LS RS * PINEWOOD ‘ * B0 k% %k RO % ‘The Beltrami County Farm Bureau had a meeting at Pinewood last \Ved- nesday. Mr. Dyorcek, the county agent, was in charge. Nels Rude and family returned Thuireday from Devils Lake and other North Dakota points. They were gone about a week and traveled about eight hundred miles. They report a pleasant trip but found the crops rather poor in many places. Miss Clara Lysing went to Trail €aturday to visig the Ole J. Rude family. i) < iCarl Clauson spent -Sunday at his home “in Pelican pids. ‘He was accompanied by Irving Lindgren of this place. i ‘The T. B. Millar family spent Sun- day at the John Millar home near Shelvin. Carl A. Schmidt took them over in his new Dodge car. i Mr. and Mrs. George Stohl of Be- midji visited with Mr. and Mrs. 8. C. Millar last Sunday. Misses Vera and Lila Elliott were shopping at Bemidji on Monday. Fred Elliott and Ray Spencer hauled T. B. Millar’s saw mill to Debs Monday. / Carl Freed is getting material for a new houge that he will build on his place east of town this fall. “Parthian Shot.” Parthia was a celebrated country of anclent Asia. It was a wild and moun- tainous country of great extent, having 25 large cities, of which the chief and capital of-the country was Hecatompy- lon, so named from its hundred gates. The Parthians were noted for their love of war and martial glory; they were the most celebrated horsemen in the world, and such excellent marksmen with the bow and arrow,! that, though in full flight and shooting backward, they could hit any object; their storm of arrows, discharged when flying from the field at full speed, being fatal as those volleys peured on an advancing foe. Hence the phrase, a Parthian arrow or shot, & shaft or shot aimed at an adversary ‘while flying or pretending to fly from him; a parting shot. tmpartial. An English clergyman, Father Black, spent a great deal of.his time visiting prisons and trying to reform the in- mates. On one occasion a house- breaker sald to him gratefully: “I must thank you, sir, for what you have done for me. There was a time when I knew nothing of God or of the devil, either, but somehow you have made me love ’em both.” ' Much Gasoline Wasted. About one-third of the gasoling used in automobiles is wasted. This is the conclusion reached by A. C. Fieldner of the United States bureau of mines, | from experimerifs under traffic condl- tions to determine the air pollution of the vehicplar tunnels under New York city. The waste Is chiefly due to too rich gasoline mixture. It is estimated that an improved and practically au- tomatic carburetor might save Ameri- ‘can auotmobilists $34,000,000 a year.
