R WETIE Gu Bugxie&—The origi TRIP—" . HELLO, OLD TOR- BuSY -1 WANTA TELL YOU ‘eouT” | My WEEK END n of “Blue Monday” Why Rich Men Want More. The reason a rich man is never sat: isfied with the size of his fortune ia not necessarily because he has ac- quired a kind of hog Instinct, but rath- er because his knowledge of affalrs and his breadth of vision have grown until he sees bigger and bigger things that he wishes to do; and his ambition to accomplish is always a few leads ahead of his capital. The richest men in the world are usually the heaviest borrowers, because they are in a po- sition to see the most to be done. Hence any man setting out to get rich might as well recognize at the begin- ning, that from the very nature of things, he can never hope to feel that he has enough.—Fred Kelly in Theé Nation’s Business. Artificial Leg Affects Watch. Good watches lose in accuracy by exposure to a magnetic field. A war veteran working in a watch factory found it difficult to keep his watch right. Knowing something of magne- tism, it occurred to him that the steel in his artificial leg might’ be magne- tized. He experimented and found this to be the case. He went to an electric light company and had his leg demag- netized. After this treatment his watch kept perfect time.—Popular Sci- ence Montply. Safety Match Swedish Invention. The safety match yas the invention of a Swedish manufacturer named Lundstrum, It has been on the marke) since 1855. Tts head contalns no phos- phorus, but holds a mixture of which ‘chlorate of potash usually forms part. The striking surface, on the side of the box, is formed by a com- pound of red phosphorus and sand. The safety match is manufactured chiefly In Sweden, Norway and Japan. — Good Word for Puzzlers. DIid you ever hear of xarque? That 1s a perfectly lovely word to add to the vocabularies of the makers of word-squares for the puzzle : page. Xarque 1is dried and salted beef, known in English as jerked beef. It .comes from Brazil and most of It is exported to Cuba. Where Plagues Start. There are four epidemic centers of bubonic plague—that is, localitles where the disease is always present and from which seed may be derived for an extensive outbreak in other parts of the world. One of these epl- demic centers is in Mesopotamia, two are In the regions of the Himalayas and the fourth is located in Uganda, Africa. The fight against plague IS necessarily a fight against rats and their tenants, the fleas. Plumbing Heating Robert J.
