“PECK’'S BAD BOY” AT ' THE REX THEATER SUNDAY Jackie Coogan, the tamous ‘child star who is featured ir. ‘‘Peck’s Bad Boy” at the Rex theater next Sun- day, made his first theatrfcal appear- ance at the tender age of sixteen months, when he crawled out ontd the stage of a New York theater Quring one of the performaiccs in which his father was playing. Jackic made such a tremendous hit-when he made his appearance unannounced, that Pa Coogan decided to keep the e “bit” ‘in “the aoct. Consequ Jackie has appeared in many theaters throughout the country. It was dur- ing ome of thesé mppearances With his father in Annette Kellerman's vaudeville act that he first attracted the ,eyes of Charles Chaplin. The rest’ is history. Suffice it to say, however, Jackie cameiby Nis histri- onic abilities quite honestly. “IF 1 WERE KING” AT REX THURSDAY-FRIDAY Extensive pre] tlons a r e being made at the Rex theater for the appearance of William Farnum in “If I Were King,” the William Fox special screen production based on Justin Huntly McCarthy’s famous play in which E. H. Sothern made a tremendous “hit.” “If T Were King’ 'will open at.the Rex tomorrow. There is something about Justin Huntly MeCarthy’s story of “1t Were King” that forever lingers in the memory—not only because the play ‘was’ a success, perhaps, but also because the book was so widely read; in fact, still is being read. How many persons can remember the play in which Mr. Sothern has scored success? Yet you will find that if you mention Sothern’s rame you will get the ‘response: “Oh, yes, he played in ‘If ‘T were King'.” The character of Francois Villon enacted on the stage by Mr. Soth- ern, seems peculiarly fitted - for Wil- liam Farnum, and the Fox' star is said to portray it with all the artis- try that years of stage experience have given him. William Farnum has done some splendid work for the screen. His pictures are always worth seeing; but when he appears in a story like “If I Were King” he stands out above all other film stars. Thrill- ing and novel incidents abound until the very end and its conclusion is es- pecially noteworthy. The sight of a heroine holding up the central figure in the drama with the demand that he wind his strong arms around her in loving embrace cannot help but con- vince picture-goers that Bennison- Betzwood pictures are different. Sandy Burke (Louis Bennison), a handsome adventurer, has rounded up a gang of cattle thieves, who have been preying-on the ranch of Jeff Kirby. - The rancher’s daughter, Mol- 1y, is grateful also to Sandy for pay- ing off a mortgage held on the home ¢ <of Widow Mackey by one of the crooks. His duties done, Sandy calls on Molly to say goodbye. He seems blind to the love light in her eyes and' as he is about to go she requests that he give her one of his guns as a memento. Sandy complies and in an muzzle of it as she orders him to throw up his arms. “Now throw them around me,” she smilingly demands. And Louis Bennison in all his career never executed an order more readily. “The Kid’s Pal,”-a, two-part Cen- tury comedy, featuring the famous “Brownie.
