OFFICIAL COUNTY AND CITY PROCEEDINGS __—___‘———‘———_—‘—-—_—__——————_—_—-—— HOW FIRM A FOUNDATION? —iow firm a foundation is the business of this city built| upon?—rock or, shifting sand? | This question can be answered most accurately by a deter- mination of how loyally the people of Be.midji support the stores of this city. The foundation of cities where the people as'a unit, nem-ly,| do al} of their buying from the home stores, is a foundation of rock: that of the cities where there is still a considerable ele-| ment of the mail-order type of people, is a foundation of sbift- ing sand, liable at any moment to be swe pt away by a furious tide. ‘Are you making the business found ation of your city of stones or sand? Are you buying at home or ftom unreliable, far-away-mail-order houses? . 3 If you are building of stone, you are increasing your own and your neighbor’s prospects in life; if you are of the mail-or- der type, you are threatening your own and your neighbor’s{m 2:00"0’alock, security. -Buy in Bemidji.! Tomorrow the mothers of our nation are specially remembered, whetherit be the hallowed memory of their presence once with us, or wheether it be the liv- ing memory of our own dear mothers still with us, For the cherished memory of the departed, we wear a white flower and for the memory of our motheer still with us, we wear a red flower. ; Mother, the cradle of the nation, the gnardian of its chil- dren, the counsel of its youth, the companion of its manhood and the coniplation of its bereaved, how fitting it is that we should set aside a day when all the nation shall cherish her memory. Let-us express our appreciation of all that mother is to us and wear in her memory a suitable flower. O MORE DISCOUNT ON, GAS, . .. The announcement of the Bemidji Gas company to the ef- fect that an increased discount of 15 cents a thousand feet wiil} be effective on May consumption, is but another evidence of the trend of the times. The attitude of the Gas company is to be commended, and we understand, according to the:manager of the company, other increases in discount will come just as soon as it is possible to grant them. If -you ‘want to be a help to your city, come across, with some of your ideas. They can’t be put into use by keeping them in the back of your head, and using the “hammer” won’t help matters a bit. Give your ideas an airing, so the fellows who can Igmkc:_ltthem work may do so and thereby give the public the enefit. F SO We notice that Morrison county has voted $100,000 worth. of ‘bonds withk which to pay debts. Of course, they expect to some fiay pay for the bonds. It’s better to have the debt all in one big slice anyway, but what about'counties that have debts in a large number of big slices? —_— Thp budget plan adopted by the United States senate is a step in the right direction. They are/displaying a streak of actual business ability. The senate hasi been referred to as a| gody ot" “figure heads,” but may now be considered a “head for gures.” 2 0 Cupid, the God of Love, usually represented by a nal:ad boy with a bow and arrow, has developed into a'full grown man at Cass Lake, according to the Times, which bears the headline, “Cupid Was a Busy Man Last Week.” Evidently Editor Utley is of the opinion that the arranging of the details| of a modern marriage is a man’s sized job, or that “Cupie” has been a kid long enough.—Walker Pilot. 5 Why Attorney General Doughtery should have refused to hear Captain Rosenbluth after he had accorded Debs a long interview is difficult for nor- mal Americans to explain.—St. Paul Dispatch.
