7 " HENNEPIN C0. SHERIFF| (Continued from Page One.) M Pl A lessed when' Robert Seiberlich ap- peared as surety. . Morris Posnick was taken into cus- tody by the federal agents a few minutes after Martinson was brought before Abbott. «Jt*s political enmity,” the sheriff said when he waited in the court commissioner’s office for bail to be fixed. “I’ve heard it talked for three weeks that they were going to get e, and I guess they have. It doesn’t frighten me any, either. I'let some ome out of the department a while ago and I've been looking for this to happen. £ Accuses Avchie Buck. “One of these men was Archie Buck, deputy sheriff. He wanted ev- erything for himself. I didn’t like it because he had been getting cars back for the insurance companies, and getting rewards’ while working for the county.” Mr. Campbell and E. W. Stewart, another special agent of the depart- ment of justice, directed the efforts of their men to.round up the other five men named in the federal war- rants. “This smuggling of booze from Canada had been going on since Christmas,” Mr. Campbell said. “Sev- eral car loads have come in. The whisky came in barrels hidden in carloads of scrap iron from Winni- “They loaded the cars with the whisky and then covered them with oM iron. It worked for a while.” One of the agents engaged in the yomnd-up declared that deputy sher- iffc had been guarding the cars of “gerap iron” while they were being mnloaded in the Minneapolis railroad yards. Man and Son Arrested. Abraham Isaacs and his son, Harry, were the next to be arrested. They and Morris Posnick pleaded not guilty ,and hail was set at $5,000 in each The suspects taken by the federal agents were to appear for preliminary ings. The round-up in Minne- sota follows an attempted raid on a carload of liquor in the St. Paul rail- yoad yards which ended in a pistol battle when guards disturbed the raid- ers at their work. Jack Burke, motor car driver and former pugilist, was shot by D. B. Webb, special agent, snd fatally wounded. The battle occured ‘early the morn- ing of January 14, when _special agents guarding the carload of liquor, which had just arrived from Louis- wille, saw two men drive - into the yards and begin to unload the cases of whisky. . Webb crawled under a cor to watch. One of the men carry- jmg . cases’ Jrom the car kicked him in the head. Webb ordered him to throw yp his hands; The order was not gbgyed and Webb d and -the ‘ma, ck - Burke, ' #fell mortally wounded. i ‘The car ‘contained 1,889 cases of Faquor valued $200,000. The police declared that the liquor was to have leen purchased by a ring of Twin (Cities business men and that $13,000 had been deposited in & St. Paul bank ag first payment. A spring Vacation for the city schools was approved by the board and will begin on Friday, March 26, and last until Tuesday, April 6, at which time the change in hours at the high school will become effective, the forenoon session to be from 8:20 a. m. to 12 noon, and the afternoon session to be from 1:30 to 3 o’clock. Salaries Discussed. Teachers’ salaries were discussed briefly, and also the salaries of -the school - janitors, and a few changes were recommended in both. Im- provements for the school grounds were also considered. Efforts are being made to secure two competent teachers to take.the positions left open by the resignation of Harry Olin, instructor in agricul- ture, and Durbahn, manpal training teacher. Both of these instructors have been doing excellent work and the replacement with equally com- petent instructors will be difficult. S PRE-NUPTIAL 'COURTESY EXTENDED MISS MAC GREGOR A very pretty social affair took place last evening, when Mrs. N. E. Given and Mrs. L. P. Warford, en- tertained twenty-five ladies at tne Warford home, as a pre-nuptial cour- tesy to Miss Mae MacGregor, whose marriage to James K. Given takes place next week. A The evening was spent in music and a number of unique-games, af- ter which an elaborate luncheon was served. The guests were seated at three tables. The centre piece for the bride’s table was a miniature bride and groom, the groom being at- tired in sailors’ attire, in compli- ment to Mr. Given. The little couple were over twelve inches high and stood on. a large mirror, making a very effective decoration. The color scheme was carried out in bire and white. . Miss MacGreghor was ‘given a m!l cellaneous parcel shower, which con- tained many beautiful and . uselul things. The evening. was one long to be remembered.
