TUESDAY EVENING, DECEMBER 2, 1919 MADE BRAVE FIGHT FOR LIFE English Engineer Acquitted : Himself Weil in_Unequal Contest With g Fierce Jungle Pest. Although lions are more trouble- some than leopards in the Katanga region (Central Africa), the latter take a considerable toll of the weak- er part of the population; they usually attack women or children. I heard of an English mining en- gineer who lost his life through one of these pests of the jungle. He was hunting fowl wher he found himself face to face with the big cat and had no choice of flight. He poured the contents of both barrels of a shotgun into the animal, but the leopard sprang at him, knocked him down and inflicted terrible wounds. The man attempted to reach his | g hunting knife, but whenever he made the slightest movement the leopard, which was lying on him, mauled him furiously. After some time the jungle cat became weaker, and the Englishman succeeded in drawing his knife and stabbing it to death. When the res- cuing party sent out to search for the hunter arrived he was found lying upon the ground with' the leopard still covering him, as he had not the strength to shake off the brute, and he was trying with his in- jured hand to.roll a cigarette. Snow and ice are not perpetual in ‘Alaska, popular belief to the con- trary, and while ‘dog sleds ‘are com- monly wused during the colder months, they are of no value in the summer, when the ground lacks its covering of white. This latter fact led a resident of the territory to in- vent a conveyance to be drawn by his dog team during the warm sea- son. A ‘sled of Indian design was mounted on four small bicycle wheels, and a steering column and wheel from an automobile were con- nected to the front pair. Five dogs, hitched in the usual manner, draw the wheel-mounted sled. The inter- esting vehicle is illustrated in Popu- lar Mechanics Magazine. THE SERIOUS OBJECTION. The Dog Dealer—We don’t keep them. Mexican hairless dogs haven’t been in vogue for some years. But your wife will like ‘this beautiful Japanese spaniel. The Customer—Sure, she’ll like it. But she’ll use my comb and brush on the mutt. NOT RICH, BUT— “They’re in very comfortable cir- cumstances.” “What do you mean by ‘com- fortable circumstances?’” “They can afford to have all the every-day necessities which are now selling at luxury prices.” IGNORANT BUT GAME. “What did the company think of the returned soldier’s faux pas?” “Most of ’em wanted to know if he had brought it home with him from Paris.” OLD MAN BEARIS&H. Jack—Helen is very kittenish, isn’t she? Tom—Yes; but you want to be- ware of her paw. . LITERAL. He—Some unfortunately fall by the wayside. (Prepared by the United States Depart- . ment of Agriculture.) The drag is a simple and inexpen- sive device: for maintaining certain types of roads which when wet become rutted under traffic and which become firm ‘on drying out. It is also well @dapted for producing a smooth and uniform surface on newly constructed roads in which the material used for surficing is earth, earthy gravel or some similar material. It is essential- ly a maintenance implement and its use in construction is distinctly sec- ondary. . Roads which are. very rocky oF very sandy cannot be materially im- proved by its use, Properly used at the right time the road drag performs four distinct of- fices. First, by moving at an angle to the:traveled way it:tends to produce or preserve a crowned cross section. Sec- ond, if used when the material of the surface 18 not' compact and hard, it tends to reduce ruts and other irregu- larities in the road by moving material from points which are relatively high to ' those which are relatively low. Third, when used after a rain it ac- celerates the drying out of the road by spreading out puddles of water and thus increasing.the. surfaces exposed to evaporation. Fourth, if the surface materfal is in & slightly plastic state, dragging smears over and partially seals the so-called pores which nat- | urally occur in ‘earthy material, and: thus makes the road surface more or less impervious to water. The advan- tage of this smearing action of the drag will be more readily understood if a sample of ordinary earth is ex- amined under 4 magnifying glass. Such an examination will show that the earth closely reggmbles a sponge or honeycomb in struccure, and the de- sirability of closing the open pores will be readily apparent. If used improperly or at the wrong time, the drag may do actual injury to a road. Dragging a very dry road, for example, serves to increase the quan- tity of dust and may do additional Drag Is Essentially Maintenance Im- plement. damage by destroying the seal pro- duced during previous dragging.: -If, on the other hand, the road is very wet and muddy, the irregularities in the surface are likely to be increased rather than diminished by dnmng._ Good Roads Available. When the people of the towns and country unite to build and maintain roads then will good roads be avail- able. ey y = {r==yy HENS THAT ARE RESTING.
