THURSDAY EVENING, NOVEMBER 20, 1919 GIANT DREADNAUGHT " TAKES WATER TODAY IN MARE ISLAND YARD +~ “California” Greatest Ship"of the United States; Every- thing Electrical GOPOT PP 0TI IO PO PP L PP PP DEI PO g Insects That Walk on Water. "Ew ASSISTANT To Insects that walk on the water by sEcRETARY oF WAH means of pneumatic floats are the familiair spider and the pond skater. ooesy| The pond skater really walks on pneumatic flonts. There are tiny hairs on the feet of this insect, so fine that they cannot be seen, that are arranged to collect air. The amount collected in and about these hairs is sufficlent to allow the insects to walk or float on the surface of the water. As each foot is put down it forms a cuplike de- pression, or tiny pit, in the water. The foot does not sink, because the air bubble that has been formed is too light to let it. A fine covering of halr protects the water spider, too, and even if it is submerged in the water it is never really wet; the hair keeps a lay- er of air between its body and the water. It looks like a white pearl when below the surface. + S e e (By United Press.) Mare Island, Calif., Nov. 20.— America’s greatest superdreadnaught the California represents the last y. Electrically driven, and said to be proof against torpedoes and mines, the . California repreesnts the last word in naval perfection. She car- ries the greatest armament of any vessel in the world. Mrs. Randolph Zane, who died of wounds received in France, christen- ed the vessel. She is the daughter of Gov. Stephens. The California has twelve 14-inch guns, four submerged torpedo tubes. 25 two-inch rapid fire guns, four 6- pounds, two 1-pounders, four 3-inch anti-aircraft guns and other guns of small caliber. The ship will be manned by 1,- 022 men and 58 officers. The keel of the California was laid ! out October 25, 1916, but during the war, work was diverted to smaller vessels to combat submarines. The work was rapidly completed after fighting ceased. - . The dimensions of the ship are: Length over all, 624 feet; breadth, 96 feet; depth, 47 feet; 2 inches; mean draught, 30 feet 5 inches; dis- placement, 32,000 tons. She will make 21 knots and has a normal fuel capacity of 1,900 tons. The California is a veritable elec- trical ship. From firing of guns to ventilation, all is done electrically. The reader will_probably agree that ice cream and coffee are en: tirely different from their true selves when served at inopportune tempera- tures; and it is a matter of record that a person of the keenest taste may make the most ludicrous errors it asked, blindfolded and with his nose stopped, to identify substances placed {n his mouth. Some very peculiar fish have been caught in a pool on the Conley farm, near Osceola, Ia, and one of them is now on display in a store window there. Despite the fact that hundreds have examined the fish no one can identify it. It is four inches long and in color and shape resembles a catfish, It has gills and fins on the top of ite tail. It also has horns on its head and four legs similar to a frog. { | ! ] HE superb qual- ity of VENUS Pencils is built into [N making a selection for your busi- ness stationery be sure that the ll sbolft asd pli paper measures up to the standard _— a e, wi o & ' “grip” tothem of your sucéess. Hear it for yourself —the phonograph which amazed all Bemidji a Are you one of those who believe that no phono- graph can match the voice of the living human? An astonishing discovery awaits you—Ilike the thou- sand Bemidjians who attended the Amy Ellerman- Fleming Sisters recital. Thomas A. Edison gave his famous Tone-Test last Monday "night in the Grand Theatre. He had Miss Ellerman sing in direct comparison with the RE-CREATICN of her voice by the New Edison.* Then he had the Fleming Sisters Instru- mental Trio play in similar direct comparison with the Re- Creation of their art by the New Edison. Music lovers were completely baffled. Their ears were un- able to distinguish the RE- CREATION art from the liv- ing. You have never heard any phonograph that approaches the New Edison. It RE- CREATES not only the musical notes, but every elusive quality of tone and color which iden- tify the original artist. Zhe NEW EDISON “The Phonograph With a Soul” Come in and hear the identical instrument* which was uged Monday evening. Make the great dis- covery for yourself.
