- #AGE TWO WHALE BLAMED FOR DISEASE | FIRST USE OF THE NAPKIN Malady That >Atuekn the Lungs le Thus Diagnosed- by Prominent Danish Scientist. The echinococcus disease (caused by a small tapeworm in the liver or lungs), which first made its appear- ance in Holland, i8 belleved by Dr. Van Delnse to be due originally to whales. The Medical Record quotes from & Dutch sclentific peper some of the facts vpon which Van Deinse bases this theory. “It 1s said that this affection is en- demic in Iceland and that it eventual- 1y reached Friesland from that locality. Not only Friesland was attacked in the elghteenth century, but many other seaports along the North sea and Eng- Ush channel. The connecting link ap- peared to be the whale fisheries, orig- inally a Basque industry, with_ head- quarters at Bordeaux. In the - seven- teenth century the channel ports en- gaged in the whale-catching industry. Friesland, possibly infected from Ice- land, also engaged in whaling, ap- peared to be a distributing point of the infection. “Not only whales, but also seals and other Arctic fauna, were perhaps in- fected with echinococcus disease, which was conveyed directly to man- kind when in starving seasons they ate this flesh and to dogs and.cats in the same manner, the animals then serv- ing as hosts for the parasite along with mankind. In time this maritime fin- dustry went out of use. Recollections of old whalers, however, testify to the custom of taking dogs along on whale ships, so that dogs could become in- fected aboard ship and menace the home dwellers.” Marine Corps Drum Honored. Glory was not won by men alone on the battleflelds of the world war, says the Popular Mechanics Magazine. ‘To fllustrate, there is the bass drum which returned from France recently with a regiment of the marine corps, decorated with a wound stripe and four service chevrons. These marke of honor were painted on one head of the Instrument, as shown in a photo- graph (illustrating the article. The wound stripe was considered appro- priate after the drum had been dam. aged by a bursting shell. Heavy Small Boy. * John Franklin Marvel, living north of Richmond, Mo., is a “marvel in- deed.” He Is the biggest boy for his age in Ray county. He is six years of age, weighs 106 pounds and was raised on the bottle. Maunufacturers of malted milk, o~ condensed mlilk, however, can cluim no credit, for he was raised on milk from bis parents’ cows. When Our Ancestors Ate \Vith Their Fingers It Was Used Prin. cipally as Towel. “Fingers were made before forks,". and that is why we have napkins. Existence today would-be bad’ in- deed.without that most essential of all table appointments, the napkin. But can one conceive of its impor- tance to our ancestors, who only a few hundred years ago ate without forks? For, as we know, it was not until the seventeenth century that forks made their bow to the most elite so- ciety of England as a substitute for the time-honored fingers. In Ho- garth’s picture of a “Guildhall Ban- quet” the whole illustrious company are seen eating with their hands. Small wonder at the necessity for the napkin, which was used not only during the meal itself but afterward served the purpose of a towel. And then it was Italy, the home of reawakened fastidiousness, as well as the renaissance of art, that came forward with the inspiration for the THE BEMIDJI DAILY PIONEER Day or night the year round.
