MINING ENGINEERS - MEETING AT CHICAGO (By United Press.) Chicago, 111, Sept. 22.—Many sub- jects: of importance to the American mining world were to be discussed at the ¥20th meeting of the American _Institute of Mining and Metallurigeal . Bugineers, which/convenes here for a five-day session today. . ‘Mine taxation, conservation of coal and fiew. developments in the meas- ureément. of high .temperatures were subjects to be thoroughly discussed. The - institute will take a number of special trips to points near Chicago, including a steamer trip to Gary, Ind., and rail trips to North Chicago and Milwaukee and to nearby coal fields. It was expected Charles Schwab would address the banquet on the 24th. NEW BALLOON RECORD EXPECTED IN OCTOBER .,(By United Press.) . St. Louis, Sept. 22.—New national and international long distance flight records are expected to be made in the national balloon race to start from here October 1. The record now is held by Allan ‘Hawley of New York. He traveled 1320 miles in 1909. He started from St. Louis, landing in Northern Can- ada. The complete entry list for the race announced by Major Albert Bond Lambert, directing arrangements for the race follows: Capt. Elmer G. Marschuetz, St. Louis; Capt. Carl W. Dammann, Wichita, Kans.; Ernest S. Cole, St. Louis; John S. McKibben, St. Louis; G. L. Bumbaugh, Indianapo- lis; H. E. Honeywell, Kansas City; Ralph Upson, Akron, 0., William Assman, St. Louis; Paul J. McCul- Jough, St. Louis and Warren Rasor, Brookville, O. ‘Honeywell finished second in, the international race in 1912 starting from Berlin and landing in Moscow Russia. He has competed in other international ballooning. Cole, Mc- Xibben,. Honéywell, Rasor and Mec- Bullough were balloon ‘instructors in the United States Army air service. The Missouri Aernoau- tical society will conduct the race. 2 ‘ VILLA SAYS BUSINESS " 00D: POSSESSES COIN ‘Washington, Sept. 22.—The first direct word from ' Francisco Villa since he was driven from Juarez by United States troops, has reached Washington in a :letter written on aeptember. 6 from Villa's headquar- ters in Northern Durango. ‘The let- ter has been placed at the uisposal of officials of the state department. In the letter Villa said ne had .large quantities of ammunition and ‘twice as many men under arms as at *any time since 1915. The ammuni. tion has been accumulated from caches in the states of Durango, the letter added, and from towns which he captured recently. . Villa also says he has plenty of money, having captured more than 1,000,000 pesos in gold and silver government coin and bullion from a train between Chihuahua and Dur- ango recently. SMOKING FURNACE IN ELK TEMPLE EXCITES NEIGHBORS While E. H. Jerrard, secretary and in charge of the Elks temple, was in the basement of the temple Sunday, he gathered some rubbish and stuck it into the furnace. Naturally the furnace smoked and excited some em- ployes of the Minnesota Light and Power company and later the fire de- partment was called. Meanwhile, Manager - Whaley . of the Elko theatre had investigated and resumed his seat when the depart- ment arrived. The audience was not disturbed. . GRAIN PALACE OPENS. (By United Press.) Mitchell, S. D., Sept. 22.—The pre- mier grainmen’s event of the north- west . opened here today—Mitchell’s annual Corn Palace. Grain men from all parts of the northwest, and in fact from many parts of the country will be here this ‘week to take part in and witness the program for the Corn Palace.
