FRIDAY EVENING, SEPTEMBER 12, 1919 BIRDS KILL OFF MOSQUITOES Mllm Helpful ‘in Exterminating Insect Pests Says American Forestry Association. ‘Washington.—If you want to free the neighorhscd of mosquitoes, encour- age, swallows to make themselves at home, says the American Forestry as- sociation of Washington, which is con- ducting the national birdhouse build- ing contest among school children. These birds feed almost entirely up- on obnoxious insects and they will do much toward protecting orchards and| other trees from insect pests. No bet- ter investment can be made, therefore, than some houses set out for martins or other swallows, Of the blue swallows the purple mar- tin is the largest, the male being en- tirely blue above and below while the female is blue above with a - gray breast. Swallows are highly migra- tory, most of them spending the win- ter in South America. Conquered Desert Sanu. The British adopted a giant “snow- shoe” to conquer the sands of the Egyptian desert, according to Maj. John Baln of the British army, who served in the near East. The scheme. which was based on the same theory that caused the Indian to adopt the snowshoe, was discovered while the army was marching to Palestine. The fine sands impeded both the infantry and horses, so that a day’s march never resulted in much more than a two or three mile advance. “Finally some inventive genius tried laying rather close-meshed chicken wire on the sands.” said Major Bain. “The Tommies were thus given some- thing that didn’t yield so readily as the soft sands, and the horses got a better footing. Immediately we found that mach greater progress was made, and our advances soon amounted to nine and ten miles a day.” Official Proceedings of the County Commissioners (Continued From Page 3.) the 2nd day of September, 1919, at 2:30 o'clock p. m.
