The draw- back has been that, as yet, there has, bedn'no co-ordination of these multi- tudinous enterprises. The president of the’ Natfonal Highways Assoclation, Charles' Henry Davis, C. E., in a re- cent paper, stated that we spent last yenr '$249,955,967, or more than: two- thirds the total of money expended so i Good Road In England. far on the construction of the Panama canal—for our road improvements throughout the country. Mr. Davis’ contention is that good roads, roads that run for thousands of miles through state after state, are, proper- 1y, not the responsibility of the state, but of the nation. He would have the federal government build a system of iational roads joining the West with the East, the North and South, connect- ing évery part of the country, as is the case with the national highways of Burope, and, as history shows, such as was the essential equipment of ev- ery first-class power of the. past. How would such an enormous construction be:paid for and kept up? “Suppose,” asks this' eminent engineer, “the gov- ernnient built 100,000 miles: of prop- erly‘planned roads, and at the same time purchased, say, 300 feet of land on 'either side. This land would so contipnally increase’in- value,,and ini demand foy: leasing on‘long';ppufll;‘ hat/ the cost of the road and the land pur-/ chase would soon be paid. A rental rate of $6.66 per acre would pay the interest on the cost of construction. But much would rent at vastly higher rates, in cities and towns, high enough to give the nation an income equal to its total annual expenditures”—from these natinnal hi~kwwawe alanal Urges Permanent Roads. It requires only a single attend- ant, who merely pushes the machine|’ forward and guides it. He controls the nmount of water distributed on the| ] floor by means of a handle. This wa- ter is immediately swept up by a cy-| s lindrical brush which is 16 inches wide and has a circumference of 20 inches, This brush is driven by a one-fourth horsepower motor at a speed of 600 revolutions per minute, The brush does the actual scrubbing and carries all of the dirt and soiled water over an apron into a separate recelving pan, so the scrubbing is ak ways done with clean water from the || upper tank. The machine is said te have a capacity of nearly 7,000 square feet of surface per hour. “Twilight Sleep” Has Competitor. “Twilight sleep,” it is said, will be superseded by the use of nitrous oxid- oxygen gas to make childbirth pain- less. The latter gas, the new use of which was discovered by Dr. Carl Henry Davis, in Rush Medical college, * is practically harmless, while “twilight sleep” is regarded by American doctors as being extremely dangerous to the patient. Nitrous gas, according to Doctor Da- vis, deadens all pain, but allows free- dom of thought and action. A patient under its influence can follow instruc- tions, and it need be inhaled only in small guantities and at infrequent in- terwenls to be successful. i WE HAVE THE LOTS What kind of a lot are you looking for? site? litte -home? e EASY PAYMENTS e Pick yours out and call on our ‘lopnl agent, The Berman Agency.
