| of Families Fed From 1,800 Mxles of Garden | e Louis W. Hill, president of the Grent Northern rmlway, is greatly elated by ierop reports received from small garden plots he turned over.free of charge to ‘families along the road’s right of way last summer. Several hundred famxhes planted vege- tables on the company’s property for| eighteen hundred miles, from St. Paul to the Pacific coast, and the returns show ' they were well repnld for their trouble, Mr. Hill estimates that if the entire pro- duction of these plots was put into one consignment it would require two freight trains of 100 cars each to haul'the vege: “tables to market. But the planting was not done with any uch purpose in view, nor did Mr. Hill xpect his railway would get an ounce of ‘haul from his philanthropic movement. All of these families enjoyed the green egetables they raised during the summer onths and many of them put into their i eellars epough potatoes, parsnips, beans, anned. tomatoes, .canned pumpkin and ther. preserved vegetables to last during| the winter months. The results of the gardening of a single amily furnish a example of what as accomplished in each instance. Mrs. McCann, 77 West Sycamore St., St. i’nul has séven children. Her husband “works #in_the Great Northern railway shops, adjoining their home, The McCann family was allowed the use of a plot of und 200x200 feet, Here is what Mrs. figfhnn and her family did: ' For satlstactory prices, bring or ship your Hides & Furs Coldberg’s Hide & Fur Cb. : 112 3rd St. Bemidji, Minn. From five cents worth of squash seeds 95 squash were Taised. From 15 cents worth of beet seeds they :ecured three and one-half bushels of eets. From ten cents worth of parsnip seeds] they got one and one-half bushels of par- snips. From two dozen tomato plants four bushels of tomatoes were produced. They gnnted about four bushels of po- tatoes, but the ground was not w ell adapted to potato growing and they only gathered twenty-five bushels, However, next year, with the soil pre- pared, Mrs. McCann says 100 bushels will e, raised easily. Mr. Hill'is so gratified “with the results that he is preparing to transform every available foot of tillable soil along the Great Northern railway into family gar- den plots mext spring. “I hope every railway in the Umted States will do the same,” he said, “for it will mean so much toward l\elpmg Uncle Sam win this world war, Just think ‘of the thousands of train loads of garden truck that can be turned into the mouths right here at home in this way! It cer- tainly is a food project of great magnitude when taken in the aggregate.” l W. K. DENISON, D. V. M.
