In time past this passion of production was based largely on desire; we desired the fruits of our labors for our gratification and pleasure. Now, however, we must produce as a matter of self-pre- servation. Indeed, the issue of the great Furopean conflict will turn largely upon the producing capacity of the United States. The normal human being never outgrows his desire for appreciation of his efforts. The desire to excel, and to lear from one’s neighbors and friends an appreciation of this excellence, is & most potent factor in stim- * DR. E. H. SMITH ulating effort. In short, achievement without apprecia- tion is but half success. Then the spirit of competition will carry us a long way on the road to successful production. A desire to excel our neighbors is a powerful stimulus. The friendly rivalry for nominal premiums spurs us to un- usual efforts. So, in order that production in Beltrami county may be stimulated to the greatest possible extreme, let us carefully cultivate this, the great- [y x g xR K KR X KX KRR @ d Ins ents est of all stimulating influences—the county fair. x DR. We are still against the slacker alien, the alien who occupies the major portion of his and whose disloyal venom is allowed to be spread wherever he may be. There should be a stringent law governing these and in fact they should be deported from this country which has tolerated them. Loyal Americans have builded this wonderful country and will con- tinue their efforts of expansion, and why they should perform the tasks for the hordes of disloyal and traitorous aliens that roam the country and who take no part in the work nor to whom citizenship means any- thing, is too much for us to fathom.
