Did so yesterday. And we’'ll make another hazard that the price will go to $25, setting another record, ‘“the highest since the Civil war,” or something like that. The price of pork has been soaring daily for the past few weeks and is continuing to do so. The packers care just about as much for the people of the United States as an infidel does for the Holy Bible and just about as much for the government. ‘What in the world a man named Hoover was appointed as “food dic- tator” for is a mystery to most people. He is supposed to be the con- troller of staple foods of the country, to keep the price down by govern- mental action, etc., etc.,, or something whatever it is, but he is about as useful from this angle as a second tail on a cat. It would be interesting to know what the government is attempting to do to the big packers ,if anything. It would seem that the packers have the government by the throat. If they haven’t they certainly have the people in their clutches and choking the life blood out of them. When Armour made that gallery play to the effect that the government could bave Armour, plants and all, it was to laugh. Why in Hades didn’t the government take 1t? But perhaps the rocking chair strategists don’t care about the patriots who are doing their utmost to uphold the government while being throttled and no one, seemingly, to care a continental darn. Talk ebout kicking the kaiser off his throne, there will be a lot of high officials in Washington kicked off their perches next general election. SHOULD MAKE IT PEOPLE'S BUSINESS A man heavily interested in coal mining in Ilinois calmly admitted in an investigation into the causes of high prices that he was after all the money he could get for his coal. He made that statement to an assist- ant attorney general of the state. He asserted that the farmers and everybody else were getting all the money they could, and even informed the attorney that if he could get $10 for a piece of legal work instead of $6 he would take the $10. . And it 18 exceedingly difficult to find an argument to answer the mine owner. We don’t blame him one bit. However, the coal mined in the country is a public nweuny lt there was any excuse for coal operators ‘combining and setting a price of $6 per ton on coal that cost $2 in Illinois, and much more up here, there would be some reason in what the coal magnate said. But there is mnot the slightest excuse and when in times like this a group of monopolists conspire to rob the public, causing hardship and misery, then is the time the authorities should step in and force the grafters into submission, and the people will stand behind any official that will do so. g i 5~ INSIDE INFO. L Tavoritism in small ways serves to indicate the administration’s idea of equality under the government. James W. Gerard, who was a large contiributor to the Democratic campaign fund was given opportunity to sell as an ‘“exclusive” story an article embodying a communication from the Kaiser to the President of the United States. There are a lot of us who could make not only a fortune but a reputation as historians if we could have a special privilege in access to the secrets of the state de- partment. s ’ SAVING ONE AT A TIME Secretary of Commerce Redfield has written a letter commending a light keeper in Chicago for his service in aiding to save a man who had fallen off a pier. The commendation is well merited, but one cannot help recalling in this connection that Secretary Redfield has never punished the sfficers whose negligence resulted in the overturning of the “Eastland” and the drowning of some 1,200 men, women and children. GERMS HELP GERMANS The Official Bulletin contains the announcement that the Red Cross has appropriated $10,000 to rid the Columbia, South Carolina, cantonment of malaria. Hurrah for the Red Cross; but what shall we say of the authorities that located a contonment at that place?
