WHAT MAKES MAN UNFIT. FOR MILITARY SERVIGE? Flat Feet, Poor Teeth, Defective] Eyesight, Lack of Chest De- . velopment Chief Causes. Washington.—A long list of condi- tions makes a man unavailable for mil- tary service, but the five chief causes are found in flat feet, poor teeth, de- fective eyesight, a lack of chest devel- opment and underweight. It is obvious that in a large percentage of cases these defects are unavoidable, just as tuberculosis and kidney trouble are avoidable. They are preventable through right living and proper train- ing, as are also many of the less impor tant causes of rejection, such as poor lungs, irregular spines and certain heart affections, says Carl Easton Wil- llams in Physical Culture. Take the case of flat feet, which'is probably responsible for more rejec- tions in the army than any other sin- gle case. About 18 per cent of all ap- plications for enlistment in the marine corpp in New York are rejected for flat feet, according to Captain Frank B. Evans. He places the blame largely on the poorly constructed shoes worn by the average toiler and on the fact These Are “Good - Service” Advertisers Offering you their “good-service”” and spending money to tell this commun- ty about themselves. Paul, Minn.—The entire direction of the reconstruction of French rail- ways behind the lines of the western _ frant has been placed in the bands of Samuel M. Felton, president of the Chi- - cago Great Western railway. He will have full charge of the ar- rangements for sending 10,000 railroad men to be recruited here and the vast quantities of material that will ac- company them, and then, it is under stood, he will go abroad to oversee the work. Mr. Felton was recently appuvinted by the Council of National Defense as ad- . viser to the chief of srmy engineers in relation to railroad affairs. at be SALT FOR CATTLE. [Natonal Crop Improvement Service.) Professor Henry says that a cow requires three-quarters of an ounce per day per 1000 1bs. of weight and six-tenths of an ounce per day per 20 1bs. milk. Therefore, a cow which weighs 1200 Ibs. and gives 30 Ibs. milk should have 1.8 ounce salt. It must be remewmbered, however, that salt is generally included in high-grade dairy feeds: It i3 well to give cows access to extra salt. On wash day 8,000 men went to the barbers and told them to cut their hair according to certain styles. This rush came through the fact that the barbers raised the price for a hair cut to 85 cents and Monday was the last day for the quarter rate.
