Beek, vice president of the St. Paul Commercial club, was introduced and spoke on “The Jefferson Highway in Minne- sota.” One of the guests was Sec- retary W. N. King of the Denison, Texas, Commercial club and vice president of the Texas Jefferson Highway association, who had come with the party on the return trip. Mr. Beek is an enthusiastic Jeffer- sonite for Minnesota and was a hard worker for it at the start. He even went south to attend a meeting as to the routing of the highway and encountered Mr. King. whose exact identity was a little obscure to the Minnesotan. Mr. Beek said King wanted the highway to run in Texas but Mr. Beek was unable to see it at-the outset, whereat Mr. King la- conically ejaculated, “If you want the highway to run in Minnesota, you vote for Texas.” “And I did,” frankly asserted Mr. Beek. Changes Clarkson’s Name. E. E. McDonald gave a fine talk on the highway and what it means and in the course of his remarks he changed the name of J. D. Clarkson for him. Mr. Clarkson is the mana- ger of the Jefferson highway and Mr. McDonald proposed that hereafter Mr. Clarkson be known as “J. H.” Clarkson instead of the familiar J. D Paul Nesbit was another distin- guished guest, being speaker of the Oklahoma legislature. He spoke on from “Palm to Pine” in an enter- taining manner, reversing the famil- jar from ‘“pine to palm” of the northern Jefferson booster. Others at the speakers’ table in- cluded W. F. Tallman, street com- not even attempt the usual counter attacks today.
