A PERTINENT QUESTION (By G. W. Harnwell) ‘With the increasing population of that portion of the city formerly known as Nymore it is becoming more difficult each year for the mer- chants of Bemidji to make deliveries to that portion of the city, owing to the fact that the streets are not named nor the houses numbered. Much time is lost daily by the drivers of the delivery wagons of merchants in finding their customers, owing to the fact that complete and definite in- formation cannot be obtained when the order is taken. As Nymore is now a part of Bemidji, would it not be an opportune time to have the houses numbered and the streets named and indicated by suitable signs. If this is a matter for the Bemidji council to take up, our Fifth ward aldermen could not do their ward and the city as a whole better service than to have the matter placed before the council and imme- diate action taken. And while doing this for the portions of Fourth and Fifth wards not already named and numbered, would it not be well to replace the street signs on those cornmers in the other wards of the city where there either have never been any or where those which have been placed have been broken dewn or lost? Chief of Police Ripple is also in for the “City Betterment’” movement. At the council meeting Monday night he broached the matter of suitable and at the same time ornamental guide posts for autoists in the business district of the city, warning signs at the road entrances to the city, also warning signs at the schools. It is believed this could be done at small cost and at the same time prevent serious accidents and perhaps loss of life and make it safer and more convenient for drivers of both motor and horse drawn vehicles. It is the right idea, too. In the Pioneer yesterday appeared a dispatch from Washington stating the railroads were going to ask congress to allow an increase in passenger and freight rates, to make up for what they claim is additional expense of complying’ with the Adamson law, drafted by a national legislator and passed by the national congress. Just as if the general public wasn't gouged to the'limit already. Sure, soak ’em some more. As for ourself, we're used to it by this time. In a brief outline of what would later come before the city council for discussion and action later, President H. M. Clark Monday night men- tioned that of improving the city hall as suggested by Mayor Vandersluis. The city building is in poor condition and could at small expense be put in first class repair, remodeled for convenience and made presentable, at the same time saving several thousand dollars in bonds for a new city building, such as has been suggested at various times. It is evident that Alderman Hazen is going to understand all about that bridge proposition before he is through with it. It certainly is. And what’s more, he isn’t going to be one bit backward in letting the public know what he finds out. Go to it Alderman, the people will be with you. ¢ 1t is pleasing to learn from the report of Alderman Phillippi that the city paupers are being well cared for. They should be, and there are some things going to be done for these poor unfortunates that will be a blessing to their declining days. Humanity, is all there is to it—nothing difficult. Alderman Moberg is a contractor, and a good one. But he is unable to see how even a bridge contracting firm can build a bridge without get- ting the material and building it. And he said so right out in the meetin’ at the city council. . Council meetings are getting interesting, seemingly. At the second session Monday night there was as large a crowd as there was the first night. Everybody goes early and stays to the finish. The bum actor is the only person we know of who has cause to.ap- prove the high price of eggs, for no man cares to hurl a fortune at an- other these days. ‘While preparing for war on a larger scale, let’s not forget to swat the fly.
