ANOTHER SERIOUS PROBLEM TO SOLVE When the assertion is frequently heard that “it cheaper to pay rent than own your own home” it is time the business interests and taxpayers of the city were taking a serious view of existing condltions. Bemidji has considerable vacant property within its corporate limits, property that should be improved and not le idle. And there is scareely s suitable house for rent and at moderate rental. They are as scarce as the proverbial hen’s teeth, a fact that no one can deny. The wage earner and salaried man know the conditions in Bemidji as well as any one and whether they desire to own their own homes or not they do not propose to make the start and receive no benefits, such as they should as property owners and taxpayers. 41 'The small home owner is the man to be copsidered. He is the chap for something if it 18 going to improve his Droperty and enhance its value, but he does object to being obliged to be taxed and then have his money /‘“’P“;} without gy consideration of the eternal fitness of things. No one 5 with aii oinée of common sense is going to buy property and pay heavy taxes and receive no benefit such as he would receive if sound btsiiess "judgment reigned instead of incompetence and a spirit of “To hades with the taxpayers,” sich #s is not altogether lacking in cerfaffi quarters. The ohl¥ solution to this problem is to elect men to public office who are meh 6f business ability, who are men of standing in a community and me# ‘who command the respect of all law abiding and decent citizens, men ‘of affairs and capable of conducting business affairs on a large scale, in- stead of individuals whose sole ambition is to perpetuate themselves in office for the sole purpose of dominating some persons who haven’t red blood coursing through their veins but who would lick the boots of a self- arrogated “politician” to whose nostrils even common decency is a stench and in whose dictionary the word *“‘honesty” is not to be found. Bemidjl will not come into her own until the remnants of the “put it over bunch” is relegated to the political s'cl'ap heap and the public takes over its business affairs. If there are any persons who think for a moment that the decent citi- zens of the city of Bemidji are going to continue to let their home city be dominated by a lot of cheap pikers and personal profit boosters they had better hurry and take that other think they have coming. And the DECENT CITIZENSHIP of Bemidji is largely in the majority. But there’s one thing you can stick a pin in and that is that the general public of the city of Bemidji have just about enough of their fill of gum shoe tactics and a few more things and some of these gladsome days the “crust” is going to be torn off. Again—"“A wink is as good as a nod to a blind horse.” - 5 g s A You'can bet your bottom dollar and cash in on the bet that what IS the public’s business is GOING TO BE the PUBLIC'S business and the PUBLIC is GOING TO KNOW about it if there is any further attempt: at strangulation. The public is no hog—it knows when it has had enough. There’s only a few short days ere the municipal election and it fs going to be up to the people of the city of Bemidji to say whether they desire honesty, fairness and good business judgment in the econduct of THEIR business affairs. It is available, if such is desired. There are some “politicians” who seem to believe that if it wasn’t for them the town would tip up or slide into the lake. Instead, if they were thrown out upon the dump where they belong the wind would turn and blow in another direction and a Chinaman sing grand opera. The trouble with the “bunch” is that they are already shying at their own shadow. They know deep down in their hearts that they are a whipped set and no amount of bluster and bluff can overcome it. A person doesn't mind being crowded a little but when it comes to a case of being shoved, that's different. The people of Bemidji will not stand being SHOVED. Speaking about ‘“records” and who's who and what’s what, it would jndeed be interesting to make a few comparisons. . There is an old saying, “You can’t make a silk purse out of a sow’s And you can't. ear.
