French Named It “God-Help-Us.” DRIVEN THROUGH FORESTS AND OVER CORDUROY ROADS Required Twenty-two Hours to Make a Trip of 32 Miles; Takes One and One-half Hours Now. C. W. Jewett, or “Chad” lewett, -as he is better known to the earlier residents of Beltrami county, and who is president of the C. W. Jew- ett Co., Inc., automobile distributors, has been identified a long time witi the automobil2 1ndustry. Before he was 21 years of age and while connected with and stadying under John C. Whistier, consalting engineer of Chicago. he had the dis- tinction of being present with Mr. Whistler, when Whistler and tkree .other consulting engineers were call- ed in by a party of capitalists to give their opinion and pass on the practic- ability of one of Chicago’s first auto- mobiles. That was in the year of 1896. Later, while located at Seattle, ‘Wash., and following his profession of electrical and mechanical engi- neering, he rendered service to the automobile owners of Seattle, said owners consisting of two men having the only automobile in Seattle at that time. These machines were Locomobile Steamers, a car that is obsolete now. Later, he returned to Minneapolis where he lived when a boy and then, as he puts it, “Come to the greatest coyntry on earth, Northern Minne- sota,” following the business of con- ‘-struction and operation of electric light plants, telephone systems and . things mechanical, finally locating at Blackduck. He brought the first automobile into Northern Minnesota and Bel- trami county in 1905, which was a one-cylinder affair of 6 horsepower, and Ed. French, who lived at Black- duck at that time, named it the“God Help Us.” There was a road from Blackduck to Blackduck lake, one . and one-half miles long. Sometimes it was passable for even the ‘“‘God Help Us.” 'Then in 1907 he pur- chased a real automobile which was a Model N. Ford roadster. This car was driven from Minneapolis to Be- midji, taking better than half a day getting from Park Rapids to Bemidji and leaving Bemidji with a man to help him, at 6:30 o’clock in the morning. They wound their way through the woods. In some places it was necessary to corduroy to get over and arrived in Blackduck at 4:30 o’clock the next morning, mak- ing the trip in twenty-two hours, a distance of thirty-two miles. The same trip can now be made in one hour and a half. This trip with the Model N. Ford put Ford enthusiasm into Jewett and he still has the same brand of en- thusiasm, which has built up the Ford business his company is now carrying on and given Bemidji and Beltrami county a Ford distributing point with five adjacent counties to it. Jewett and his organization are tireless workers and their business has grown by leaps and bounds. An example of this is shown by bona fide orders with shipping instruc- tions which were placed with the Ford branch at Duluth in the month of January for one hundred and five cars to be shipped into their whole- I sale territory for the months of Jan- This did not uary and February. town. Mr. Jewett has been president of the Minnesota Retail Automobile Dealers’ association for the past three years, which is affiliated with the Retail Automobile Dealers’ Associa- tion of the United States, a fast growing trade - organization. That he never forgets Bemidji was shown when he named his Ford Special racing car “Bigmidj”’ and in the presence of 28,000 people at the Twin City Speedway last Memorial day, sprung the biggest surprise of the race meet by defeating cars, some of which were twice and three times the horsepower of the little “Big- midj.” His car qualified at better than 90 miles per hour. “WENT UP INTO HEAVEN ON HIGH” IN FORD? Here is a new Ford story we saw somewhere, but have forgotten just where. A man in California writes to the Ford company and tells them they should feel very much exalted for the reason that the Ford is the only car mentioned in the Bible and to prove it cites them a message in Isaiah which says: “He went up into Heaven on high” and asks what other car but a Ford could do that? LONGBALLA TO CARNIVAL Martin Longballa. of the Long- balla Land company, went to the Twin Cities last evening on busi- ness. He will join the Bemidji dele- gation at the St. Paul winter sports carnival tomorrow, returning to Be- midji Saturday. PLACE ORDERS EARLY FOR OVERLANDS, IS " ADVICE OF WILCOX Every magazine of national circu- lation as well as newspapers and other periodicals carry Overland ad- vertising. The Overland car, which is sold in this territory by John Wilcox, who maintains offices in the Troppman building, is without ques- tion the most widely advertised car sold. . It is this advertising that creates the big demand for this family car. The Overland people make numerous styles and a wide range price car, enabling them to give Overland qual- ity in practically any size car, rang- ing from a roadster to a large seven- passenger car. According to Mr. Wilcox, the pros- pects for the coming season far ex- ceed the allotment of cars for this territory, but says that if orders are piaced early, he is of the opinion that his allotment may be increased. The Overland will be at the Minne- apolis show and those wishing to see a modern car at a modern price will find it in the Overland display. EXCELLENCE OF REO RECOGNIZED; BATTLES FILLS MANY ORDERS When the aemand for the Ren car in this section became so evident that men were anxious to buy the car through agencies in other cities, C. E. Battles was finally persuaded to stock the Reo car. His first season proved entirely satisfactory and the car is giving satisfaction to its owners. Some of Bemidji’s most prominent men drive the Reo car and like it. The New Reo the Fifth is still listed to sell for $875, but orders are taken only on condition that price change may be made without - AUTO - SECTION Sz (UL T B $360.00 _ $360.00 WILL FORD RAISE PRICE WE ARE ASKED THIS QUESTION MANY TIMES A DAY WHY TAKE CHANCES? notice.
