CLARK WOULD MAKE FINE OFFICIAL It is a source of much gratiflcatldn to the many friends of H. M. Clark, president of the Clark Pole & Tie company, that he is unopposed for the office of alderman-at-large at the coming election. It is a situation of which Mr. Clark himself may well be proud, and that he is, there is no “politician”—and that reason alone should commend him heartily to every intelligent voter and those who have the interests of their home city at heart. ‘What can be used to advtanage in every community is sound business judgment and a fearlessness to meet business conditions as they are and And there are mighty few but believe that such a man is H. M. Clark. He has never been in the spotlight of munie- ipal or any other politics and is not a chronic office seeker. He is a man of large affairs and he has been a success. His being a success indicates that his business policies and judgment are correct—otherwise he would not have become a success. There is a time in the affairs of every new city when it must throw The sooner the That’s right PLAY THE GAME SQUARE. off the shackles and fetters of “any old kind”’ of a regime. better. And take the step forward to its place in the sun. where Bemidji stands today—ready to take that step. Bemidji needs just such men to conduct its business affairs which are the PEOPLE’'S affairs—The TAXPAYERS' affairs—the people who PAY for WHAT BEMIDJI HAS and IS GOING TO HAVE TO BRING HER INTO HER OWN. NORTH SEEKING COUNTY DIVISION Baudette and Spooner people had a get-together meeting last Tuesday night (last week) and practically agreed to consolidate the two villages, preparatory to starting a county division campaign, and hnve» sent out word over the north end inviting those interested to attend a meeting next Tues- day night at Baudette to start the ball rolling to secure' legislative action at the present session of the legislature. i Of course, the object is to not only secure a county-government for the territory north of Red Lake, but also secure the location of the county seat at Baudette. They will find the entire district in favor of division, but the county seat location should not be settled in too big a hurry, for with the settlement of the territory yet in embryo, a location which may look logical enough at present may be altogether unsatisfactory a few years hence, and it may be that in five years from now the large prepond- erance of population will be centralized around Williams or Graceton, either of which are geographically far more central than the village on the Canadian border line, and we hope that a large delegation from all along the line take the Muskeg next Tuesday afternoon with the purpose of attending this meeting. It is only necessary to remember what they did about the proposed .county fair, a few short weeks ago, to judge what they would do on a county seat proposition if they could put it over without .endangering the main object of division. We are not saying that we would deny them the county seat if that section continues to hold the central strength of popu- lation and wealth, gets more railroads and becomes a preponderating city —but we do say that the time is not ripe to decide the matter—Williams Northern Light. There are some persons, who are not newspaper persons, who seem to be laboring under the impression that it is up to them to tell 2 news- paper what it can and cannot do. But there are also times when a news- paper is called upon to tell such personages just how effective is their ‘bluff. More anon. Judas Iscariot betrayed his Savior for thirty pieces of silver. But there’s one thing about Judas you've got to give to him for, and that is after he had done such a contemptible trick he went and hung himself. Haven’t heard of some ‘“politicians” doing that, have you? We haven't, either. Of course we're not trying to apologize (sort of like that word) for Eve, but there's one thing we're going to say for her and that is that while she didn’t wear much, what she did wear wasn’t transparent. We know of only one two-legged animal that ranks as an unfit asso- ciate even for the devil, and that is the price boosting speculator in food- stuffs. Hell wouldn’t have him. ‘We might also mention in passing that it will take more than a snort to scare the Pioneer. This merely for the information of any individuals who might be interested. f The idle rich in Europe have been forced to the dire extremity of go- ing to work to earn bread and butter. Which, praise be, will be some aid to digestion. Not mentioning any names, but if some persons would make up their minds to become gentlemen they might become such—in time. On the theory that misery loves company, General Pershing no doubt will welcome the news that Obregon is going to “get Villa.” ) Every time we get a bad taste in the mouth it makes us think of that man Carranza.
