The arrival of a European in a Zulu village, the opening of a railway, a war, a famine, a plague of locusts, a pestilence may become topics for semi- public songs that are soon circulated among the people. Songs are used at the public functions of chiefs, such as the feast of the first fruits and at roy- al marriages. War and tribal songs are possessed by every chief and tribe. At ma ges and other public ceremo- nies it is the Zulu custom to render not only the songs of the living chief. but those made famous by his father and grandfather. Barrie had agreed to write a play for Frohman and met him at din- ner one night at the Garrick club in London. Barrie seemed nervous and ill at ease. H “What’s the matter?” said Charles. “Simply this,”” said Barrie. “You know I haveean agreement to deliver you the manuscript of a play?’ “Yes,” said Frohman. “Well, I have it all right,” said Bar- rie, “but I am sure it will not be a commercial success. Itisa dream child of mine, and I am so anxious to see it the stage that I have written an- her play which I will be glad to give you and which will compensate you for any loss on the one I am so eager to see produced.” “Don’t bother about that,” said Frob- man. “I will produce both plays.” Now, the extraordinary thing about this episode is that the play about whose success Barrie was so doubtful was “Peter Pan,” which made several fortunes. The manuseript he offered Frohman to indemnify him from loss wags “Alice-Sit-by-the-Fire,” which last- ed only a season.—“Charles Frohman, Manager and Man.” ST :Why Not This for a GIFT? 19 I IIIIIIH|IIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIII!III_IIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIlIIIIIIIllIIIllIIllIIIN - :Pioneer Phomnes 922 - 923 T T T B * * * x umn must be in before 11 & x * * * * Kk Kk Kk ok Kk K XK KKKKRKKKK KKK Barrie’s play, .
