a Didn’t Know McKinley. Once when William McKinley was governor of Ohio he and Corbett had a long chat in a parlor of the principal 'hotel in Columbus. As they walked down the steps into the office a drum- mer standing near said, “There goes Corbett!” Instantly there was a rurore and another drummer standing near asked, “Who is the little man with him?”"—From *“The Fighting Man,” by William A. Brady. The first steel pens were sold for about 40 cents each. Cows Need Water In Abundance. All animais require plenty of good, pure water. This is especially true of the milking cow, as water constitutes more than three-fourths of the total volume of milk. The water supply therefore demands the dairyman’s most careful attention. oo elo elo efe oo efe oo o ole oo ofe oo oo ol o e oo o DAIRY WISDOM. Comfort is the keynote to sue- cess. No cow can be comforta- ble if half starved and cold. Supply sufficient food in the stables to keep up the milk flow and condition. Wash the cow’s udder before milking and keep 94 per cent of dirt out of the milk that usually gets in otherwise. It is the well cared for herd that returns the greatest profit. For enduring profit the skim- milk should be fed on the farm. oo o obe o ok ol ofe ol oo ofe ole ofe ofe o b o o e ofe ofe e ol oo ofe oo oo ofe ole ol ol ol e ofe o o oo ook cle e bbb bl ol ol Fleetest Animals. Writers of a century ago were firm in the conviction that the greyhound was the fastest living animal; some maintained. that he could run a mile in a minute. Modern observers, however, have found that the best hound is by no means able to keep pace with a trained race horse. Indeed, the late J. A. Graham, a careful student of such matters, used to say that no living animal could outfoot a modern race horse. A first rate horse running his best and not handicapped by carrying a rider can run a mile in less than 100 seconds. A fleet hound, such as those used in coursing,-can run a mile in about a minute and fifty seconds. ‘A jack rabbit is nearly as fast, and an antelope is considerably faster. Mr. Graham thought an antelope might run a mile across the level prairie in & minute and forty-five seconds. On the other hand, Mr. Cottar, an old African hunter, thinks that Thom- son’s gazelle would have no trouble whatever in running away from the fastest horse and that Grant’s gazelle and the gerenuk are almost equally fleet.—Youth's Companion.
