KOOCHICHING COUNTY The name of this county was applied by the Chippewas to Rainy Lake and also to Rainy river and the rapids at International Falls. It is said to be a word derived from the language of the Grees who lived in Canada and has been translated as Neigh- bors. The county which bears the name was establish- ed in 1906. On the arrival of a British liner in New York the other day, it was announced that two German sub- marines had been seen at sea 1,200 miles out from Bordeaux. Interest was added to the story by the state- ment that the submarines were head- ed this way. BEvidently they were U-boats of a new and powerful type, capable of making the trans-Atlantic passage. Their purpose, it was as- sumed, was to cross the ocean and prey on munition ships sailing from American ports. And in case of war between Germany and the United States, those fearsome craft would be on hand to attack the American navy. Or perhaps they would start an indiscriminate campaign of fright- fulness against American shipping. It developed that those submarines were mere products of excited imag- ination. Now that the thing is start- ed, however, there will be no end, to it. Sea serpents have gone out of style lately, but here is a good sub- stitute. We may expect to hear every week or two during the spring and summer that U-boats have been seen headed for the United States or cruising off our coast. Bathers at Coney Island, Revere Beach and At- lantic City are sure to see them with as much frequency as they used to see crested sea monsters in the off- ing. WORK IN'GARDEN. Do you want to -develop your muscles, and stimulate your appe- tite, and aid your digestion, and put more color in your face, and make yourself feel metter all over gener- ally and inside in particular? Thirty minutes exercise a day will do it, CGo out into the garden. Use a hoe, or'a spade, or any of the ‘tools neces- sary to produce ‘something to satisfy the ‘appetite you will be creating. Use your tools and your brains at the same time. and in the end you will be better physically and brighter mentally and your table will be well supplied - with ‘edibles that have cost you nothing but. the exercise every normal constitution ‘demands. CLEAN UP YARD. Take a look at your -neighbor’s yard. It may look -better than yours. Your neighbor may even be cleaning it up while you are look- ing, when as a ‘matter of fact you ought to be cleaning up yourself in order to make your yard look better than his. That’s a way to make stran- gers look twice at a city they pass through. 'History may resurrect it, but the rest of us have completely forgotten that Irish rebellion.
