HUBBARD COUNTY This county was named in honor of the governor of the state in office at the time when it was established— 1883. Lucius Frederick Hubbard came to Minneapolis from New York in 1857 .and was editor of the Red Wing Republican until the outbreak of the Civil War. Enlisting as a private in the Fifth Min- nesota, he was its colonel within a year and in 1864 was breveted brigadier gen- eral. He was in the state senate from 1872 and gov- ernor from 1882 to 1887. In the war with Spain he again served as brigadier general.
