TO PREVENT FIRES Last year $4,722,925. worth of property in Minnesota was destroyed by fire. Reporte ‘and investigations show that three-fourths of this en- ormous loss is attributable to..care- lessness. This year the loss must be cut down and the people of the state educated to the necessity of helping to bring this about. | Here are some instructions for pre- vention of fires. Don’t put ashes in wooden boxes or barrels. Use metal cans. Don’t throw hot ashes fences or buildings. Columbus, ‘0.=Various - problems of practical- work in' insurance will be considered at the annual meeting of the Federation of Mutual Insur- against GENERAL OFFICES ¢ NEW YORK AND CHICAGC =RANCHES (N ALL ThE PRINCIPAL CITIES LET GOOD NATURE CONTINUE The city elections are being held in Bemidji today. The campaign for mayor and other offices is over and the people have today been reg- istering their will. Tonight when the ballots will be counted, the cam- paigns will be history. Tomorrow morning when the elec- tion returns are made known, be con- tent, no matter which way the elcc- tion goes. This is a plea for the ¢on tinuance of good nature no matter what happened today. We are friends and neighbors and we must all live together, no matter what happens. Why not live as friends, no matter how we may differ in our opinions politically. There is no use in holding a poli- tical grudge against any onme. We feel sure that whoever is the choic2 of the people of Bemidji will surely conduct the affairs of his office to the best of his ability. Every good citizen should assist him as much as possible. Let us do our best to as- sist the officials of Bemidji in main- taining good government and in mak- ing Bemidji one of the most progres- sive cities in the Northwest. No matter which way today’s elec- tion turns out Be a good winner—and Be a good loser—and Be a gentleman WAR ORDER PROSPERITY Increased sales and better collec- tions all over the United States, as a result of our war order prosperity, are shown by the second annual mer- chandise research report of the As- sociated Advertising Clubs of the World, which compares the 1915 trade in six representative business lines with 1914. During two-thirds of 1914 trade in all lines was stag- naling in this country, but in 1915 the ring of gold poured into the lap of American labor by the stupendous trade incentive of the European war, becomes the clink of coin on the counters of the retailers. The report shows the following in- creases in sales, by percentages, 1915 over 1914, in the lines investigated: Department stores, 19 per cent; gro- cery stores, 8.8 per cent; clothing stores, 17.9 per cent; hardware stores, 18.3 per cent; drug stores, 11.6 per cent; jewelry stores, 18.9 per cent. sion shows an increase in retail trade “in these six lines in 1915 over 1914, the smallest being recorded in the Pacific states—California, Oregon and ‘Washington, where the effect of the war order stimulus is dispelling the Democratic business depression of 1914 has been felt more remotely. BE A COMMUNITY BUILDER None will deny that -willful, prep mediated. indebtedness is wrong. Nothing will impair a man’s stand- ing in a community more- than con- tracting the habit of making small debts and letting them run on in‘ definitely. It's the little things, af- ter- all,- that are the: tests of .char acter. There:are very few persons who are unable to pay the little debts they owe. When they neglect them they are placed in the same category as the fellow who won’t pay. The result is that they suffer by compar: ison. There have been instances of men who were close friends for years becoming enstranged over a fifty-cent debt. To .promote friendship and gomi feeling among your neighbors and friends during pay-up week hunt up those you owe and square the amount. | Don’t wait on the other fellow. You see him first. And then make it a habit on the first day of each month to meet your obligations. If you owe more than you can pay, pay what you can. Let your creditors know that you haven’t forgotten your ob+ ligations. It’s more honest an manly than dodging them year in and year out. Wouldn’t it be only fair to them and to yourself?
