EMPEROR TO KYOTO FOR CORONATION Takes Imperial Shrine With Its Sac- red Treasures, Divine Mirror and the Jewel for Celebration, Tokio, Nov. 6.—Japan’s emperor today departed for Kyoto, taking with him the imperial shrine with its sacred treasures, the divine mirror, the sword and the jewel be- queathed to the emperors by the sun goddess, in anticipation of his cor- onation at that place Nov. 10. Twenty to Witness Scene. ‘The substance of all the corona- tion rites to be observed between to- day and Dec. 1, is ancestor worship “Justified by the grace of Heaven from time immemorial.” Not more than twenty white persons will wit- ness this bizarre, splendid, yet simple return to the primitive days of the world when man worshipped the spirit of his dead father in temples that were rude huts. Shrine is Plain, Count Okuma characterized this ceremony as “the natnral reverance of a son for his father, carried be- yond the grave and expanded into a great system of society in which the nation is a super-family and the émperor a super-father.” Every phase of the ceremony is some com- munication of the new emperor to all the dead emperors concerning his as- cension to the throne. The shrine, covered in a gorgeous and bedizened “bogie carriage” is it- self just a plain( white, unde-corated wooden shed such as the first emper- ors used. To Receive Ambassador. On Nov. 9, the emperor at Kyoto will receive George Guthrie, Amer- ican ambassador at Tokio, and for- Japan, play of red-white-and-blue conserva- tively-shot with the flags of all na- tions. o One of the biggest ‘“horsey” feat- ures of the show will be the military classes, which will be judged by no less a personage than Major General Leonard Wood, and not even Secre- tary Garrison can overrule him this| time. operated with President Stotesbury of the association and other officials to notably. demonstrate the efficiency of Uncle Sam’s mounted men.
