Beltrami Music Go. 114 Third St. Bemidji TWIN CITY SPEEDWAY T0 BE EXCELLENT ‘Work on the track of the Twin City Motor Speedway near Minnehaha and Fort Snelling and between the cities of St. Paul and Minneapolis, is progressing with giant strides and the two-mile motor course is rapidly assuming concrete form. The grad- ing for the course has already been half completed and the pavers will begin their operations' the first of the coming week. This track is to be paved to a depth of six inches with concrete, with a width of eighty feet in front of the stands and bleach- ers and sixty feet in other sections of the course. To remove the objec- tionable glare common to paved tracks this concrete will be dyed a mild green color, thus increasing the comfort of the spectators and insur- ing an increased degree of safety to the drivers. This million dollar amusement en- terprise is the biggest thing in the line ever attempted in the west and it is the belief of the engineers in charge of the construction that this will be the fastest course ever built. The paving contract alone calls for an expenditure of $225,000 and the order for 30,000 barrels of cement placed the other day with a Twin City firm formed the largest single order placed in this section in years. The paving firm is under contract to finish by August 15. Seven huge grandstands with a re- served seating capacity of 65,000 will afford seats for the throng. Four Gt these will be 500 feet in length, one 650 feet in length and two 700 feet in length. A contract calling for sixty thousand opera chairs .was placed Monday and this constitutes the largest order ever given in this country. Three tiers of boxes each with six seats will front the stands. The boxes total three thousand in number with a total capacity of 18,- 000. They will be six and one half by eight feet and will be equipped with arm chairs. A bleacher 750 feet in length will accommodate the admission crowds. The First Annual Twin City 500 Mile World’s Motor Derby will be run on this course early in September and will be renewed each year as a classic. This race will be open to the world and will be for a purse of $50,- 000. Three days of elimination races will* precede the main event and in these eliminations contesting drivers will be called upon to show a speed of at least eighty miles an hour for one lap of the two mile track. F. H. Wheeler of Indianapolis is president of the speedway company and holds $995,000 worth of the stock, the total of which is one million dollars. At no time has any stock been for sale, nor will it be, as Mr. Wheeler, as president holds that amount. The contracting parties in the construction will turn the track and grounds complete over to the speedway company late in August in plenty of time for the ini- tial race. BEMIDJI PRAISED AS CITY OF FUTURE (Continued from first page). ~ denomination of importance is rep- resented.’ Is a Paradise. Some reference has been made to Bemidji as a summer resort, but this feature deserves much more extended mention. It seems paradoxical that a live hustling community of 7,000 people, depending on manufacturing and distributing trade, can also offer attractions both as a summer resort and as a mecca for sportsmen and fishermen, yet such is the case with Bemidji is on the “height |ol land,” the watershed between the Gulf of Mexico and Hudsdn’s bay. The altitude and the wonderful sum- mer climate make it an ideal resort for the summer visitor. The natural charm of the Northern Minnesota woods is still untouched in many regions about Bemidji. The summer tourist can get any kind of an out- ing he desires. If he wants a well kept, modern summer hotel where moderate prices are charged, he can get it in the Birchmont hotel. ¥t he wants to put a pack on his back and start off with his canoe, he has 40,000 square miles of territory to choose from, and a thousand lakes or streams to drop a line in. If Providence ever intended to create a Paradise for the love of out-of-doors that Paradise is the district around Bemidji. A City of the Future. Beltrami county is blessed with a copious rainfall, the average annual precipitation being about 30 inches. The new settler has no dry-farming problems to solve. Hot winds and destructive hail storms are unknown. As a matter of fact, the climatic con- ditions which confront the farmer are practically the same as those which confronted the pioneer in Ohio, Indiana and Illinois. The water is not only abundant, but is pure. Bemidji is indeed a city with 2 future, a city of promise. It has too much to offer not to continue to grow as it has grown, or with accelerated speed. To the young man it offers opportunity; to the old man, comfort and contentment; to the man with a family, a place where he can secure a home and independence; to the farmer, cheap land; to the manufac- turer, cheap power and transporta- tion; to the investor, unlimited chance to increase his fortune; to the seeker for pleasure, something that will appeal to the most jaded taste; to the invalid, health among the pines; to the common, everyday cit- izen, a home where he is as good as his neighbor, if he is honest and in- dustrious. Bemidji is a city of friendly, demo- cratic, hard working, home loving citizens. It is the best type of a clean, hustling young community, built on the solid foundation of great natural resources, and its business men are tackling the problem of de- veloping those resources in a way that will not be denied.
