Howard Elliott, once president of the Northern Pacific railroad and now striving heroically to untangle the New York, New Haven and Hart- ford and to restore it to the good graces of the sedate spinsters of New England, must have remembered his old school reader’s lesson on cour- tesy. He believes in politeness, even under the most trying conditions of railroading, is the comment of the Minneapolis Tribune. Recent Mr. Elliott issued a bulle- tin on ‘“‘courtesy” for the benefit of the thousands of employes of the New Haven system. Here is what he said: “Courtesy is a business asset, a gain and never a loss. ‘“‘Officers and employes, above all others, should be courteous. “Use courtesy in all dealings with passengers, patrons and one another. “Railroad men help their com- pany by being courteous. ‘““This railroad believes in cour- tesy. “Even the discourteous like to be shown courtesy. “‘Smooth away life’s difficul- ties by being courteous. “You will find your value in- creased by courtesy. “Life is not so short but there is always time for cour- tesy.” Mr. Elliott, tactful as a diplomat himself, doubtless spoke out of the fullness of his heart and experience. He advised railroad men to be cour- teous to one another. That is ex- cellent philosophy and wholly prac- ticable, although any railroad man might call to mind situations on the line which -Mr. Elliott’s rules on courtesy’ by common consent would be suspended. But the rules are good for all that, and they might be applied in any business with benefit to all concerened. They are worth trying.
