The unnamed colliet had no wireless apparatus. The Protesilaus is a British mer chant steamgr of 6,118 tons, which under charter of the British govern ment, sailed from Victoria, B. C., in Nevember for Balboa, Panama canal zone. It was assumed she carried coal and supplies for the British naval vessels. TURKISH TOWNS BOMBARDED Russian Vessel Attacks Villages on the Black Sea. GERMAN FORGE WIPED 0UT, RUSSIANS SAY Petrograd, Dec. 24.—Two thousand Germans, part of a column of the ad- vance on Warsaw, were annihilated in a single engagement along the Bzura river. Details of the fighting show that the Russians west of Warsaw masked their artillery and did not open fire on the closely packed ranks of the Ger- mans until they were in midstream. The destruction of life was fright- ful. Hundreds of wounded were swept off their feet by the current and, weighted down by their -heavy equipment, were drowned. The advance was completely check- ed. At other points mines were ex- ploded along the banks where the Ger- mans endeavored to force a crossing. The steady advance of the Russian forces north of the Vistula is now threatening the German flank. The Germans, retiring on a thirty-mile front on a line from Niedenburg to Lautenburg, are endeavoring to pro- tect the system of East Prussian rail- ways upon which they depend for the transportation of troops. The Russians are swinging south- ward toward Thorn and the Germans have been forced to hurry troops in that direction. GERMANS Are Very Active Africa. "Defective Page RHELMATISM NOW Says We Must Keep Feet Dry, Avoid Exposure and Eat Less Meat. Stay off the damp ground, avoid ex- posure, keep feet dry, eat less meat, drink lots of water and above all take a spoonful of salts occasionally to keep down uric acid. Rheumatism is caused by pmsonous toxin, called uric acid, which is gene- rated in the bowels and absorbed into the blood. It is the function of the kidneys to filter this acid from the blood and cast it out in the urine. The pores of the skin are also a means of freeing the blood of this impurity. In damp and chilly, cold weather the skin pores are closed, thus forcing the kid- neys to do double work, they become weak and sluggish and fail to eliminate this uric acid which keeps accumulating and circulating through the system, eventually settlmg in the joints and muscles causing stiffness, soreness and pain called rheumatism. At the first twinge of rheumatxsm get from any pharmacy about. four ounces of Jad Salts; put a tablespoonful in a glass of water ard drink before breakfast each morning far a week.-This is said to eliminate uric acid by stimu- lating the kidneys to normal action, thus ridding the blood of these impur- ities.
