Loncon, Dec. 18.—Calm but deadly anger is the keynote of national senti- ment following the sensational rald upon British coast cities by German cruisers which bombarded Scar- borough, Hartlepool and Whitby. ¢ Despite the fact that the German warships succeeded in threading their way through the mine flelds of the North sea and approached within a mile of the British coast at some points there is a firm determinatjon not to permit such isolated raids to interfere with the present plaps of the admiralty and war office for the disposition of the British naval and land forces. o The latest casualty lists account for eighty-five civilians killed and 267 wounded in the three cities attacked. In* addition the war office estimates the casualties in the Hartlepool fort- ress at seven soldiers killed and four- teen wounded. Among the victims in the unforti- fied English towns were women and children, who were killed in their homes when shells crashed into the city. The London and provincial newspa- pers unanimously support the admir- alty and the war office in the deter- mination to follow out all present plans for the fleet and the army. The greatest boom in recruiting since the war began is certain as’a result of the German bombardment. | GERMANS ARE REINFORCED Three Additional Army Corps Reach Russian Front. ? London, Dec. 18.—The correspond- ent of the Times in Petrograd under- stands that three additional corps from the west have reached the Ger- man armies on the Russian front, making altogether nine corps which have reached Field Marshal von Hin- denburg within a month. The Ger- mans were thereby able, he says, to send two corps to Hungary, while re- taining twenty corps on the Polish front. b The Times correspondent adds tha it appears that 170,000 Austro-Germans have already crossed the Dukland ahd neighboring . passes in- the Cupath_i_np mountains. The Austrian contingent, he says, includes three activity corps, the withdrawal of which from the Servian front:led to disaster there.
