‘12 ENTIRE BLOCK OF o BULDINGS BURNED Fire at' Pottsville, Pa., Causes Loss of Two Million Dollars, Pottsville, Pa., Dec. 18.—Fire in the business section of Pottsville wiped out property valued-at nearly $2,000,- 000. An entire block of business build- ings, which were heavily stocked with holiday goods, was destroyed. It was the worst fire in Pottsville history. The area burned over is bounded by Center, Second, Norwegian and Mah- antongo streets. Twenty stores, the Pennsylvania ‘National bank and the Academy of Music, one of Pottsville's leading playhouses, were among the buildings destroyed. The postoffice caught fire but was not badly dam- aged. The fire started in the rear of the ‘Woolworth store and spread on the one side to the Britton-Hoffman furni- ture store and on the other to the City department store, owned by a New York-Cleveland syndicate. The upper floors of the department store {were used as offices. The flames com- municated with stores and other build- ings. Inability to secure a sufficient water supply in the early stages of the fire is given as a cause of the rapid spread of the flames. GERMAN PRESS LAUDS WORK OF ITS FLEET Berlin, Dec. 18.—Codderning the shelling of Scarborough 4d Hartle- pool the Berliner Tageblatt says: “Again our naval forces, facing the danger of the scattered minéd in the North sea, shelled English fortified places.” The Deutsche Tageszeltung express- es satisfaction with thé attack, es. pecially immediately aftér thé naval battle off the Falkland i8lands. The Berlin Neusten Nachrichten had this comment: “This time it is not a daring crius- er trick with the transitory throwing of a bomb, but a regular bombard- ment of fortified places, which is a new voucher for the gallantry of the navy.” The Boersen Zeitung says the bom- bardment possibly is the herald of great_er events.
