GOVERNOR COX DEFEATED Ohio Struck by Old Fashioned Repub- lican Landslide. Columbus, O., Nov. s—Ohio was struck by an old fashioned Republic- gn landslide. The Republicang elect- ed Frank B. Willis of Harding county governor by a plurality estimated at 15,000 over Governor James M. Ccx. The Republicans elected Warren G. Harding of Marion United States sen- ator over Attorney General T. S. Ho- gan by about 75,000 and elected the entire state ticket and secured con- trol of both branches of the general assembly. The Republicans captured at least ten of the twelve Ohio congressional seats, as compared with three Repub- licans and nineteen Democrats in the present congress. Nicholas Long- worth, son-inlaw of Colonel Roose- velt, was returned in the First dis- trict over Stanley Bowdle, the present incumbent. Taxation, woman suffrage and state- wide prohibition amendments to 'the state constitution were all defeated, taxation by the largest vote. BELGIANS CLAIM VICTORY Definite Defeat of Bavarian Army Re- ported. Paris, Nov. 6.—Definite defeat of the Bavarian army, which tried to Back its way to the coast, is claimed by the Belgian army. A dispatch from Havre, the tempo- rary Belgian capital, states the Ger- mans have retreated inland. The Germans have now concentrated a mew line of attack and their efforts are being made around Ypres, Arras and Lille. It was the action of the Belgians in &utting the Yser dike that caused the withdrawal of the Germans on the ex- treme left of the allied line.
