CAPE COD CANAL IS FORMALLY OPENED Big Ditch to Aid Traffic in Massachusetts Bay. Sandwich, Mass.,, July 30.—The Cape Cod canal, dreamed of ever since the earliest pilgrims followed the old Indian trails across the nar- row heel of the long curved peninsu- la which incloses Massachusetts bay, was officially opened here with high officials of the state and many famous New York financiers as the guests of August Belmont, organizer of the company. The twelve-mile sea level ditch, which adds another link to the chain of canals along the Atlantic seaboard, is expected to open a new era in sea trade between New England ports and those south of the cape. Between Boston and New York alone it will} save seventy miles in distance and| four hours in time and prevent the disastrous wrecks which have so long strewn the desolate sands of the cape.
