Montague Teported: “Urban, American, was killed 'eight- een miles west of Nacozoori, in the state of Sonora. George Cooper, his partner, was with him at the time, but escaped. Cooper states that the Mexicans shot Urban down _from concealment in a house and without provocation.” A report on the killing near Neu- vo Laredo of Porfirio Laurel, an American, received by the state .de- partment, said the murdered man’s body was taken across the American border and buried at Laredg. CONVERGE ON MEXICO CITY Capital City Next Objective Point of Rebel Forces. Juarez, Mex., May 23.—The federals have evacuated Saltillo and military activities will now be transferred to South Central Mexico. All Constitutionalist forces will be- gin at once to converge on Mexico City. It is not now believed the fed- erals will attempt to make a stand at San Luis Potosi, which is already besieged by General Torrleste and General Aguierres. Queretera, capital of the state of the same name, will probably be the scene of the next big battle, which will decide the fate of General Huerta and his government. .Quaretera is the key to Mexico City from the rorth. ) NO MALARIA AT VERA -CRUZ 8ick Rate Among Soldiers Less Than Two Per Cent. ‘Washington, May 23.—General Funs. ton reported to the war department that the sick rate among the soldiers at Vera Cruz is 1.9 per cent, and 1.46 per cent among the marines. There are forty-one soldiers in the hospital and nineteen in their quar- ters, while among the marines the sick total is forty-five. The general said that there was no malaria in the camp. The war department, upon General Funston’s request, is preparing to send to Vera Cruz apparatus and chemicals sufficient to render water fit to drink for the soldiers for a period of thirty days. GETS EXTRA STENOGRAPHER Takes Two to Keep Pace With Colo- nel Roosevelt. Oyster Bay, N. Y.,-May 23.—It took two stenographers to keep pace with Colonel Roosevelt as he made his way through a mass of letters and telegrams and dictated replies. Sevéral thousand of these commu- nications have come to Oyster Bay since the colonel’s return from Suuth Amerlca. . His secretary went through them first, sorting: out the ones which re- quired the colonel's immediate atten- tion, and after they had been cut down to an irreducible minimum there were still several hundred left and the colonel sent pest haste to New York for an extra stenographer. BRITONS ADMIT THEIR GUILT Nine Army Officers Confess Connec- tion With Graft. London, May 23.—Pleas of guilty were handed down by seven of nine British army officers and the eight civilians charged in January last with graft in connection with contracts for supplying army canteens. All the officers except Lieutenant Colonel Whittaker were connected with the guartermaster's department of "the army and had risen from the ranks. The civilians accused were employes of Liptons. Ltd.
