MORGAN PUT MELLEN AT HEAD OF RAILWAY Former New Haven President on Witness Stand. ‘Washington, May 15.—Former Pres- ident Charles S. Mellen of the New Haven railway took the stand before the interstate commerce commission in its inquiry into the road’s affairs. “What is your occupation?” asked Chief Counsel Folk. “I am assistant to the commerce commission,” replied Mellen, with a broad smile. “I think it is becomjng to say at this point,” interjected Counsel Grim, “that Mr. Mellen is willing to give a full history of his connection with the New Haven. In fact, he courts the oepportunit; “What persons were responsible for yeur being made president of the New Haven?” “1 think the person chiefly respon- wible,” replied Mr. Mellen, “was the late Mr. Morgan. “My salary was $£0,000 a year for a time and after- ward $60,000.” Mr. Mellen’s examination had searcely begun when an adjournment was taken until next Tuesday.
