The homemaker contributes most largely to the family income through her work as home manager. Just as the services of the man who manages a farm, planning and directing the work on it, are worth more than the services of the day laborer who does what he is told, so are the services of the home manager of greater value than those of the cook or laundress or seamstress. As in the case of the farm manager, so with the home manager, the earning power increases with the ¢fficiency with which the work is done. If the home manager is to realize her highest earning power she must do her work in the best possible way. The woman trained in home manage- ment has greater earning power than the one without such training. If in addition to the management of her home the homemaker does the cooking and laundry work, she surely earns the wages which would have to be paid to some other woman who did the same work, or which this wom- an would be paid, if she did the work in another family. If the homemaker does the sewing for the family, she earns the differ- ence between the value of the cloth, thread, etc., with which she works, and the value of the finished garment. If she has made a $12 dress out of $4 worth of material, she has earned $8, not saved it. Recent experiments indicate that a large percentage of the losses during incubation and brooding can be di- rectly traced to this neglect. From the time the chicks are hatched till they are ready for winter quarters, we should he constantly on the look- out for those of weak vitality, for this defect is often concealed by an ap- parently healthy growth, after which its detection is almost impossible. Even when selecting eggs for hatch- ing. none but those of normal size and shape, with smooth, strong shells, should be chosen. . The bird should be active and show strong character.
