Having been captured by Constitu- tionalist troops the prisoners were summarily condemned to death be- cause they wrecked and burned the Cumbre tunnel and allowed a Mexican Northwestern passenger train to plunge into the debris. Los Angeles, Feb. 12.—A discovery designed to thrill the sclentific world and to appepl profoundly to the imag- inations of mankind has just been made in one of the asphalt pits of the La Brae ranch, near Los Angeles. In this hole, from which the bones of saber-toothed tigers, - mastodons and giant sloths have been taken, the skeleton of a man three feet in height has been found. He was against a mammoth bear of the Pleistocene pe- riod, and twenty feet of earth crust and 200,000 years had accumulated over this contemporary of the two- toed horse. He was near the trunk of a tree of that inconceivably remote period, which, scientists declare, stands now as it grew then. Almost as near to this prehistoric man as were the bones of the bear was embedded the complete skeleton of a wolf as big as a present day ele- vhant.
