THIS PAPER REPRESENTED FOR FOREIGN - ADVERTISING BY THE “AwERCIN] GENERAL OFFICES NEW YORK AND CHICAGO BRANCHES IN ALL THE PRINCIPAL CITIES CAUSED BY GERM INFECTION Joint Ail Quite Common With Young Coelts This Season. ‘Joint ail, indicated by swollen Joints and lameness, has been gquite eommon with young colts this sea- son. This is caused by germ infec- tlon which usvally gains entrance through the raw navel at the time of dirth or immediately after. To pre- vent this the mare should be allowed to foal only in clean and thoroughly and recently disinfected box stalls or in clean, open pasture. If the colt’s navel is not already broken it should be scraped off, leaving the stump about two inches long. The thick fluid should all be squeezed out of it and the surface should then be paint- ed twice a day for two days with tinc- ture of iodine and the iodine should be allowed to extend down a little way on the skin around the stump of the navel. Hands, instruments and everything that touches the raw navel must be thoroughly cleaned, disinfected and not contaminated by touching any- thing before handling the navel. It is much better to have valuable colts treated by a veterinarian. In any case it is better to employ a veterinar- ian for the first case and have him show you just how the work should EARLE A, In order to bring duplicate button holders together more quickly I find it necessary to change the system somewhat. 1 Beginning Monday morning, De- cember 15, at 9 o’clock, I will open a registration department in the store and will register all buttons brought in. When a duplicate but- ton has been registered I will at once hotify the parties who hold dupli- cates so that they may come in and select their gifts. Need Not Come Together, It will not be necessary for the duplicate holders to appear at the store together, which will avoid any unpleasant getting together. Come as soon as you are notified and make your selection, as the best choices are made first. Already there are several thous- be done—DM. H. Reynolds, Veterina- |ard buttons distributed and thus far rian, University Farm, St. Paul. $® Practical Fashion Hints By Alice. Gibson The little tot will be doubly pleased with her Christmas doll if it is accom- panied by a complete, ‘wardrobe. This set of patterns (8012) will make matters much easier for the mother or big sister who is dressing the doll or dolls. i There are a coat in drop-shoulder style gathered into a band at the bot. tom; a Russian blouse suit: a coat suit with a vest and a two-piece skirt at- tached to an underskirt; a Tam-o-shan- ter cap and a little round hat with a shaped brim. 3 A set of these patterns accompanying the doll would make a highly interest- ing and instructive gift for the little maid of 10 or 12 sew. These patterns are cut in sizes 14, 18 and 22. This Is a Perfect Pattern. In selecting the pattern. be governed by the length of the doll. measuring from the crown of the head to the sole of the foot. ' This set may be obtained by filling out the coupon-and enclosing 10 cents fashionable : in stamps or coin to the Pattern De- partment of this paper. COUPON people have been unable to locate BARKER duplicates. The’registration feature will eliminate this. All that you will be required to do is to bring your button in Monday morning at nine o’clock or as soon thereafter as pos- sible and have it registered. When arother of the same number is en- tered we notify both holders at once. How To Get Buttons. With every dollar purchase at the Barker store you will be given a ‘button. The moment you get it have it registered. Then compare it Wwith any number already registered. It is possible to secure your gift be- fere you even leave the store, should you find a duplicate number on the register. Be sure to get in the line-up Mon- day morning at 9 o’clock, your but- ton might be there waiting for you. Out of town people are: requested to mail their number so that they may be registered. NEW BOOK FOR BUSINESS MEN portant That All Should Have Inside Facts On International Commerce Without stopping to give the mat- ter serious comsideration, the av- erage business man would thing that “Panama and the Canal in Picture and Prose” is merely a book of his- tory and travel which has no bearing upon his particular line of business. Viewing it from another angle it carries a message of the utmost im- portance to every one in any way connected with commercial pursuits. Why? Because it gives not only the history of the great canal, but its purpose and promise. It sets forth the great changes that must be brought about <in international com- merce by the wedding of the great oceans. It shows how the nations of the world are to come into closer re- lationship, both socially and com- mercially, by this connecting water- way. In our own country the great canal becomes a common highway for the products of Canada and Brazil, as well as for those of the United States. This must have some effect upon your own business, for these are the three prolific commercial coun- trise of the great American conti- nent, and any change in the present order of marketing with one is more than likely to develop new nad dif- ferent trade conditions with the oth- ers. So the business mian who does not read this volume is not alert to the interests of his own business. Realizing the educational value of this new ilustrated volume. The Pjoneer is offering it to readers for ihe mere expense of distribution. This is explained in the anouncements printed in these columns from day to who s learning o/ oy, L0k for the Panama certificate in this issue and clip it to-day. Notice .
