TORRANCE o . i - Getting Out of the Rut Adverstising is-a creative force in business. Its aim is to stimulate business—put new life into an enterprise. Advertising is like a stream, it cannot rise above its source. The source of advertising is the firm behind the advertising. All advertising -should sparkle with originality. Most merchants are in a rut, and stuck fast in the rut. Custom or some usual way the merchants _ have of doing things has enslaved them—they are in a business rut. Everything novel or original is looked upon by them with suspicion.. They drift along and follow blindly, without any vim and origi- nality. - And then they wonder why it is that only I 5 merchants succeed out of every 100 that engages Il in business. This is Dun’s & Bradstreet’s statistics. The merchant, who wants to get out of the rut, and: line himself up with the successful 5 per cent, must conduct a modern establishment, and study and practice modern business methods, taking up with the good and discarding the bad. There are ruts in advertising.-In fact the adver- tising rut is the most killing rut into which the mer- chant gets. The merchant is in an advertising rut when he prepares an ordinary ad without any individulity in it. That an ad may have individuality there must be creative power back of the advertise- ment. - Look at the successful advertiser and we find: they are men who have ideas of their own and have the nerve to put them into their advertisements regardless of how-others advertise. A good way to avoid advertising ruts is to st\ld‘y carefully thé advertiséments of leading city mé¥- chants in the same Kne, picking out the good that is _ local and timely. Theideas thusgained will be in- valuable. The merchant should also study the subject’ of adyertising' geperally, and. he will then gradually and naturally avoid adyertising ruts.
