The rebate on these freight receipts will be returned to the holder on its pre- sentation to their local depot agent. There will be no trouble about it whatever, and this can be done when the proper time comes and it is ex- pected in a very short time. A mes- sage from the railroad and ware- house commission says, “Beware of speculators. Do not turn your freight These sent out receipts over to anybody.” letters are ,we presume, over the whole country and the best thing to do is to leave them alone. Is the election of senators by the direct vote of the people, a good idea? Is it worth while? Will it cause members of the senate to have more or less regard for pre-election prom- ises? Although only a short time has passed since the direct election of senators became the law those who have been familiar with senate atmosphere for years, declare it has changed considerably, and for the better. A significant thing in this con- nection has just occurred. For the first time in the history of the gov- ernment, the average rate in a tariff bill has been reduced in the Senate. The average rate in the senate tariff bill is two per cent lower than the average rate in the house bill. At the same time, the Senate amendments will result in the government receiv- ing some three million dollars more in revenue annually than under the house bill. The senate has changed. There is no doubt about that. A knowledge that if they desire to re- main in public life, they .must have some regard for campaign promises, seems to be working out for the pub- lic good. Success of Tariff Bill Now Certain. The tariff bill will pass the senate, with the free wool and free sugar teatures intact. This seems to be al- most certain at this time. At one time it was feared that some of the senators would forget democratic campaign pledges and refuse to sup- port the bill. ever Democrat in the senate save the It is now believed that Louisiana senators, will support the tariff bill. i Parcel Post Rates Too High. . In fact, it is The public is being charged too high rates. The Parcel Post is cleaning up profits at the rate of over 20,000,000 Nearly two-thirds of the gross revenue received from carry- ing parcels is clean profit. Represen- tative David J.
