It contains a hint that lmay be useful to some reader who hall hereafter find himself in a sim- :!ar disagreeable situation. The other night the farmer who owns the fields in which I have the fishing came to say that I must be- ware of the bull, for he had found that the animal’s temper was getting bad. The bull had always greeted me with a threatening rumble whenever I assed near him, but as the farmer ad assured me that the animal was entle, although “it did make a little aoise," 1 took no notice of him. !/ The farmer told me that he was 4y walking behind the herd when, t any warning, the bull turned came straight at him. He had a leavy club in his hands, and he ptruck the animal with all his might ‘over the head and eyes several times, when the club broke.. For the mo- ment he did not know what to do, and thought it was all over with him, ‘when he remembered that some one ‘bad told him that a bull would not &ck you it you lay down, so he threw himself flat on his face and shouted for help, and three of his men who were not far off came running to the rescue. ‘When they got within about twen- ty yards he told them to come on their hands and knees, and in this way they came up alongside of him. ‘The question then was what to do? They came to the conclusion that the only thing left was for all of them to retreat backward on their hands and knees. This they did, and the bull, mever more than a yard off, followed ithem up with his head slightly on one side. Meanwhile he snorted and bel- lowed, and his eyes, showing all the whites, looked, the farmer said, as if thy would come out of his head. At last the men reached the river bank, ‘slipped over the edge, and so escaped. WILEY IN DEFENSE OF BABES “The Providence | Adore Has Never Yet Killed a Baby,” Says Doctor. Dr. Harvey Wiley recently made a strong plea for methods of education and for the -sort ‘of legislation that would insure to every child born into ‘the world its rightful heritage of health and vitality. | nally, a long and a happy life. He said that the Biblical words, “The eius of the father shall be visit- #d upon the children, even unto the third and fourth generation,” should be changed to read shat the sins of parents are visited upon the children forever, and that likewise the virtues of the parents are also transmitted. A good heredity, he said, means, us- “Above all,” said Doctor Wiley, “I would like to live to see all the chil- dren of.this country come into the world with a good heredity. The problem of youth and age goes far back into that of heredity, and in the interest of society the state should recognize this fact.” # The speaker also held “the fatal combination of love and ignorance” on the part of parents as largely re- sponsible for the high infant mortal- ity. “When you have killed the child,” said the doctor, “you look about for a. scapegoat, and lay the blame on Providence. The Providence I adore and worship has never yet killed a Yaby.” Tanbark as Fuel. Perhaps the most important of waste fuels in the United States has been spent tanbark. A rough estimate} would indicate that this material gen- erated a few years ago an amount of steam -that would have otherwise re- quired the yearly consumption of about 2,000,000 tons of high-grade coal. Yet this valuable fuel, says the En- gineering Magazine, was at one time, considered a mere detriment and an! expense to the leather industry. It was disposed of by dumping it into rivers, filling in waste ground, and by making roads with it, often necessi- tating the paying out of large sums; for its disposition. This etrikingly', [Mlustrates a case of how the improve- ment of a furnace converted a hither- to supposed combustible into a valu- able waste fuel of the auto-combus-| tible class, and shows how an enar | mous waste was-converted into an| equally great economy. f Bush League Caliber, “My dear.” “Yes, John?” i “I think we'll have to send this new, asok hack to the miners.” i | State of Ohio, City of Toledo, !
