( J - NELSON SAYS THAT “KINDNESS PAYS” (Continued from first page). and does not have the best oppor- tunity to lie chewing her cud and making milk, “The dairy cow has hind quarters like a cat—‘cat hammed’, I call it. They are slender and wide apart and give room for a large udder. The ud- der should be hung high and should be of good size. Wnen touched it should be soft and yleld as a sponge. The teats should be long and point downward. . A dairy cow should stand squarely on her feet, have a bright watery eye, and have a gen- eral appearance of good health.” Selects Cows For Type. Mr. Nelson then explains his talk by saying that he does not advise any farmer to buy a cow simply be- cause she has one or more of these earnarks but that the points he has outlined are good ones by which to judge an individual animal. “A dairy cow is one of a type and with careful breeding and selection you can greatly improve your herd.” Mr. Nelson has won his way into the confidence of many of the farm- ers because he stands for things as they are and urges that they be im- ‘proved by common sense rather than the outlay of capital. He urges them to stick to the breed they have but to improve their herd by proper breed- ing and selection. Some Cows Not Paying Board. “One third of the cows of Minne- sota are costing the farmers from $7 to $30 per year for the privilege of milking them,” is one of his startling statements. “Another third are barely paying for their board while others are making money. I am in favor of a testing association to which the farmer can send sam- ples of his milk once a month and have it tested in order that he may weed out his unprofitable cows. We need one in this country badly.” At the close of the program, Mr. Nelson usually holds an open court in the rear of the school house and there the farmers gather with him and they discuss everything from the latest silos and stump pullers to the best remedy for milk fever— ‘which by the way consists merely of blowing up the udder with air from a bicycle pump five or six times a day. The extension work is required of the high school by the state act which provides the state aid money. MINNESOTA TRAVELING MAN IN i BAD SHAPE.
