THIS DATE IN HISTORY. September 14, 1777—Burgoyne crossed the Hud- son and encamped on Saratoga Heights. - 1829—Treaty of Adrianople, end- ing the war between Russia and Tur- key. 1847—American army, under Gen- eral Scott, entered the City of Mexi- co. “In the Midst of Life.” Three times within a few more days than it takes to make a month has the hand of Death reached into this commounity and violently taken a life from it. In each instance it was a man and in each instance the realizing the full strength of his powers. man was just The first to go was Norman Helm- er who on August 9 was shot and killed by an unknown hobo whom he was accompanying to Bemidji where the latter was wanted as a witness against an Italian who had been dis- turbing the peace of the community. In a revolver duel, both men lost their lives, but the one snuffed out by the bullet from the gun of the tramp was one that had already proved it had found a place in the community that it could fill and was then filling. Vint Ellis was the second to go. ‘While his death did not have the spectacular setting” of Helmer’s, it was none the less a shock to the com- munity. While on a pleasure trip he went into the lake to retrieve by swimming, a shot duck, but was un- able to fight his way back to shore. His young wife sat in their auto so near that she easily heard him shoot but heard no outcries if there were any. Ellis was a young man, but one who had already won a place in the business and home life of Bemidji. The third to go was Ernest Ander- son, a pressman in the Pioneer shop. The first two deaths struck close home, but the third was as if a mem- ber of our own family was taken without a moment’s warning. The Thursday edition was but half off the press when the accident happened and it will be many days before the force of Pioneer will be able to print an edition without the memory of Ernest Anderson coming to the front in their minds. _ Truly, “In the midst of life we are in geath.” Should Guard the Children. Many times during the auto races at the county fair yesterday the hearts of the spectators literally stood still for fear that some child would be hit and severely injured or pos- sibly killed. They seemed to take delight in darting across the track just ahead of some machine that was being thrown through the air at the rate of forty miles an hour. - Not enough guards were provided to keep the crowd on the inside of the fences, but the parents of those chil- dren were algo negligent in not know- ing where their children were and watching to see that they kept with- in the bounds of safety. Such con- ditions must be watched closer next year for there is the possibility of a trajedy the awfulness of which will never grow dim in the memory of Be- midji people. THIS IS MY 58th BIRTHDAY. Bishop Lsrael. Bishop Rogers Israel, head of the Protestant Episcopal diocese of Erie, Pa., was born in Baltimore, Sept. 14, 1854. His education was received at Dickinson College, where he gradu- ated in 1881. He was ordained a deacon of the Protestant Episcopal church in 1885 and a priest the fol- lowing year. In the succeeding years he filled pulpits in Meadville, Scran- ton and several other Pennsylvania cities. When the Protestant Episco- pal diocese of Erie was created Dr. Israel was selected as its first bishop and was consecrated in February of last year.
