The convention system, under which candidates for United States presidents are nominated have been frequently subject to manipulation and has suddenly grown into popular disfavor. Under its operation, fraud and cor- ruption are well nigh inevitable, and the will of the majority frequently ignored. The methods employed in the recent national Republican con- vention have failed to meet the ap- PAID ADVERTISEMENT ($10.00 for Series). I announce myself as a Republican candidate for momination to the of- fice of county attorney for Beltrami county at the primaries September 17th, If nominated and elected I will continue to conduct that office econ- omically, as a purely business one, and in no sense as a political office. I solicit not only the votes, but the active co-operation of the people of this county in my candidacy. GRAHAM M. TORRANCE, Bemidji, Minn. The foregoing resolution was ad- opted shortly before adjournment at 3:20 this morning. Bismarck, N. D., Sept. 5.—Fight- ing over the question of repudiating President Taft as the standard bear- er of the Republican party, the state central committee, which organized yesterday was still in session at 2:4% o’clock this morning. There appears little hope of early agreement. The question came up before the committee in the form of a resolution being broached upon a plank declar- ing that a man’s attitude on the na- tional ticket be not regarded as a test of party fealty, was up for con- sideration. This plank was agreed to by the congressional and state can- didates, and was presented to the committee for approval. In the afternoon a motion was didates to vote for President Taft, but it was voted down. Frank Sprague of Walsh county was elected chairman of the Republi- can committee, succeeding Senator Talcott. James W. Foley of Bis- marck was elected secretary. In the platform- that has been pro- posed condemnation of the old con- vention ysstem is one of the features propoged. Minneapolis, Minn., Sept. 5.—An- swering a riot call twenty-five police and plain clothes men headed by Captain Geo. Revere, assistant su- perintendent of police, last night clashed in a battle with a mob of approximately 500 attending a So- cialist street meeting and as a re- sult seven members of the crowd were taken to jail and scores probab- ly are suffering with broken heads. The Socialist leaders attempted to get the crowd to disperse before the clash with the police. The trouble last night came as the result of an order issued early in the week that all street meetings must be held within a certain district because of the state fair traffic, thus preventing gatherings at Fourth street and Nic- ollet avenue where the Socialist meetings are usually held. On both Monday and Tuesday nights some- trouble was had by the police in dispersing the crowds there but last night when at first a patrol- man and then patrolmen and Captain Revere attempted to disperse the crowd which was litening to a-wom- an orator, they were disregarded. Revere then sent in a riot call and at the head of the police with drawn clubs again and again charged the crowds. The battle lasted almost three quarters of an hour.
